Dream's POV:

Y/N really wanted to visit Swap today, so I let them. Who could even say no that their adorable face. It always made me smile, and positivity radiated from them all day, everyday, no matter the situation. That's what I adored about them. They always made others and themselves smile.

"Dream! Help!" I heard someone yell in fear. I immediately recognized the voice as Y/N's. When would Y/N need to be yelling so loudly, and so fear filling in an AU like this? I continued to run towards their voice, and then it hit me. Literally.

A sharp bone plunged through my eye socket. I felt fear coarse through me. I caught a glimpse of Y/N being suspended in the air, right before a skeleton blocked my sight. Their iconic brown scarf flowed in the cold AU's wind. The skeleton held their "Broomy" out to their side, and held a fighting stance. I stayed laying on the cold wet ground, covered in its white powdery snow.

"Let the human go Nightmare." Ink's voice was firm, and serious. Little emotion was heard in his tone, and it concerned me for a moment too long. I heard Nightmare's deep chuckle, and then Y/N grasp for air.

"Why should I?" His voice echoed. I could see his sadistic grin from where I kneeled down on the ground. I refused to let Nightmare dare be near Y/N. I vowed to protect them, and them protect me in instances. I grit my teeth, and anger fueled my adrenaline.

"Woah woah Dream, no need to be so angry. It might just be your downfall." The last part of the skeleton's sentence held a darker and threatening tone. I furrowed my eyebrows, and summoned my staff, shaping it into my bow. I held it in front of me, ready, and aimed to fire a positive arrow straight through Nightmare.

"So that's how you want to act Dre-" Nightmare was cut off by Ink swinging his paint brush, slashing a bright neon pink over Nightmare's grin. I heard wild muffled come from Nightmare, and he gripped at the pink. It stained his fingers, and he looked at me with an angered expression.

I readied myself for an attack, but none came. Nightmare just stood there, holding Y/N. Usually, if Nightmare or one of his accomplices didn't attack, Ink usually would. But he didn't, for Y/N's safety.

Nightmare raised a brow, noticing this. A sweat bead formed on my skull, as we had a stare down. His confused expression changed to an extremely sadistic one. He snapped his head to Y/N, and the fear in their eyes was present. They tried to fight against Nightmare's grip, but couldn't.

Nightmare chuckled, and turned to me. "Get them." was all Nightmare said. Killer and Dust propelled themselves toward Ink, and Horror swung at me with his axe. I'm glad Error hadn't tagged along this time.

Y/N's POV:

This whole entire situation was fear filling. I feared for both my life, and Dream's. I knew someone was going to lose their life. If I wasn't so helpless and careless, we wouldn't be in this situation.

"Keep being sad. That makes me stronger." Nightmare glared at me from the corner of his eye socket. His wide sadistic grin stayed in place, and it sent shivers up my spine. My lips quivered, and I looked down, avoiding eye contact with the skeleton.

He held me so lazily, it kind of hurt. He treated me like I was some object, unlike Dream. They were completely different. They used to be brothers from Nightmare's explanation before taking me captive.

"What do you want with me.." My voice was weak, and it was quiet as I spoke. Fear was the only thing I could feel at that moment, and I was not confident at all.

"You're bait. All I need to do is kill Dream, and you're free to go." My eyes and brows shot upwards at the same time. Panic shot through me, and I brought my head up, looking at Nightmare. His wide grin had lessened, and he looked unamused.

"These idiots." Nightmare's voice was quiet, yet still echoed. His brows furrowed, and his grip on me tightened. I grunted, and bit the inside of my cheek. I held onto the tendrils around my stomach, and tried to take advantage of the little breath I had.

"Dream! Fight me, or I kill the human!" Nightmare's voice boomed. He sounded angry, and I feared for Dream's life. I honestly didn't care if I died for Dream. I was a small soul in the entire multiverse, and Dream needed to help protect it.

"Dream! No! You need to protect the AUs!-" A tendril wrapped around my face, and over my mouth, keeping me from speaking, I bit it, and it held itself a bit away from my face.

"I'm just an inferior soul compared to the Multiverse. You need to protect the AUs, I'm fine." I reassured Dream. I saw him calm down a little bit, but that didn't stop him from walking up to Nightmare, ready to fight.

Nightmare was going to jab a tendril into my stomach, before Dream readied himself. The negative king's grin grew wide, and he let me fall to the ground. He now had the opportunity to kill Dream, and was going to take it.

Dust, Killer, and Horror had been captured by Ink during the brother's battle. Ink monitored the trio, and stayed put. Dream and Nightmare's battle went on for ages, and Dream was now losing. He would surely be killed.

Dream kneeled on the ground, coughing up blood. Nightmare had many arrows in him, but still kept on fighting. He sent a tendril Dream's way, with a mischievous and evil grin. Adrenaline shot through me, and I ran to Dream.

Pain.

Dream's POV:

Y/N laid on the ground, curled up, holding their stomach. I heard Nightmare start laughing. "Well! I wasn't expecting that. So be it, I've made your life worse Dream, that's enough for me for now. Next time, I'll kill you." His tone was dark, and he seemed proud.

He cut the trio free with a tendril, and Ink splattered the man with paint. The trio went through a portal that had been opened, and Nightmare followed behind, throwing around curses like a sailor.

I turned my attention to Y/N. Thick red blood seeped through their clothing, and a gaping hole was in their stomach. I gasped, and tears started flooding out of my eyes. I held my hand to my mouth, and cried.

"Y/N! No! Don't die on me.." I held their cold body in my hands, while their soul floated above their chest. They didn't respond. It hurt. Someone that I had vowed to protect and love, just died for me.

I hugged their body, not caring if I had blood all over me because of them. Their arm slowly rubbed my back, and I pulled them away. They barely clung onto life itself, and looked up at me.

"Sorry love. I hope you can continue to protect the AUs. I know how important they are to you." They chuckled, and blood slowly crept out of their mouth. I grit my teeth.

"They're not as important as you are Y/N! I don't want to lose you! I love you too much!" I hugged onto them. They didn't hug back, and their breathing slowed down quickly. I kept them close to me the entire time. There was absolutely nothing I could do to help them. They were dead.

"Dream.." Ink came up behind me. I heard his clothing shuffle, and his arms hug around me, trying to comfort me. I continued to cry. Too much was happening, and I wasn't in the mood to think about anything except for Y/N. They were too young, and it was too early for Nightmare to take them away from me.
