A great deal of ambiguity exists on who was the first to invent binders. The first patent for the loose-leaf paper was filed in 1854, making it the oldest patent globally. In the same year, an American, Henry T Sisson, from Rhode Island, filed two further patent applications for the A4 binders, 2-ring binder, and the 3-ring binder, all of which were granted.
