 ◈

The May 1st holiday was —simply put— too short, and was only one day longer than the usual weekend. Thus, when classes reconvened, the feeling of having celebrated a holiday hadn't even kicked in.

It didn't help either that Lao Xu was completely rooted at his desk putting great emphasis on the final exams for three to four consecutive days. Also repeatedly mentioning that after this final exam, they still had to confront the upcoming college entrance examination that took place in a year's time.

Jiang Cheng rested his body on the desk with his chin on a notebook and his eyes half-closed as he listened to Lao Xu, patiently persuading them with earnest and well-meaning advice, up at his desk and surrounded by the humming of words from the students down below.

In accordance with the atmosphere of Si Zhong, the only factor that this classroom of students probably grasped from Lao Xu's mention of the finals and college entrance examination was the summer vacation smacked right in between those two stages.

Although it was no secret that high school seniors started the semester early, even considering only half a summer vacation, it was much better than the May 1st three-day break that had just come to an end. The people surrounding him had already started to discuss it in advance.

°

"What do you normally do during summer vacation?" Jiang Cheng tilted his head and asked Gu Fei, who was looking down, playing with his cellphone.

"Working part-time, sitting in the shop listening to Li Yan and the guys spitting nonsense, sometimes go out and eat," Gu Fei said. "Keep Er Miao company. There's time in the summer to take her out for systemic rehabilitation activities."

"Oh..." Jiang Cheng froze, feeling the words he heard made the events of the summer sound rather boring and exhausting.

"Wanna work some part-time jobs together?" Gu Fei said in a lowered voice, "Ding Zhuxin has work, some that are hers and some her friends."

Jiang Cheng never thought that one day the words "part-time job" would take shape in the days of his summer vacation. But the living expenses that consisted of rent, water, electricity and phone bills, tuition for the next semester, and any other uncertain future costs, suddenly forced him to think the bank card in his hand held no sense of security.

It was only then that he became aware of how innocent and sweet his imaginations were in thinking of all the means to relax during the summer and answer some worksheets at most. He pondered on it for a moment: "You're gonna be there?"

"En," Gu Fei sounded, "I wouldn't have asked you if I wasn't going too ah."

"Do you normally take photos of models and the sorts?" Jiang Cheng questioned.

"Not always, I pick up other jobs too, commercial products and such, it's better without people included." Gu Fei smiled, "And if there's time, I would take some pictures for submissions to publication, though I haven't submitted any yet this year."

"Fuck," Jiang Cheng said quietly, "Why are you so awesome? Where have you put in submissions before?"

"Just some magazines, the ones for photography and travel." Gu Fei put down his phone, "It doesn't pay much but it lets me talk about costs when I pick up other work."

"En," Jiang Cheng nodded.

Gu Fei's heart was completely out of sync when it came to studying, nor had it seemed like he ever considered these things, but he was truly impressive in other areas that he dedicated his heart to.
