Chapter 23: Brugmansia of Danger

Tanjiro's red eyes were widened with shock. After a few months of training, his memories came back to him. It always left the boy confused as he did not know the whole situation. However, that day, after months of being stuck in an endless nightmare, he finally had a reason to keep going, to not give up...

His sisters were alive.

After the puzzles pieces came into place, he could finally understand what his instincts were saying. He was a demon slayer, going on his first mission and had unfortunately met an Upper Moon who thought that Tanjiro was the reincarnation of his long-lost brother. The boy had become the thing that he swore to destroy. Had he not remembered his living siblings, he would have already killed himself. After all, it always seemed too easy to find the sun.

Helplessness had settled after barely a week, when Kokushibo had forced fed him another human, this time a pregnant woman. That traumatized the younger one, which caused a loss of motivation. He could not escape the six-eyed demon. He always seemed to know his intentions despite him not acting upon them. It was like he could see right through him. While he was able to use all of the Sun Breathing techniques, with some difficulty, he had not yet been able to turn the sword red. His body and mindset were not quite there, but he knew he was coming closer to it.

However, it would hardly matter in his escape.

When Tanjiro was improving himself, Kokushibo did too, and faster than him. There was absolutely no way for the young boy to beat Upper Moon One by himself. Not now or ever. That hardly stopped the red-eyed demon from giving his best into the trainings. Sometimes, he would just follow the instructions of the older demon, or they would have small battles. That sightly helped Tanjiro in another way; he could now understand the patterns that the other used, and he could also associate smells with some of his actions.

Suddenly, his head was chopped off.

He had once again forgotten that he was battling with the yellow-eyed demon. His main body, which was being stared intensely by the other, quickly bent down to pick up his head. Somehow, those actions caused the older one to be even more possessive of the boy. He could smell it.

"Yorrichi... You truly have become weak. Not only that... but you get easily lost... in your thoughts. While you could... easily kill a normal slayer... if you get distracted... you won't make it. You are still useless. Without me... you would already be dead," Kokushibo said as his glaze became harsher. Tanjiro had gotten slightly used to those insults; it always felt to him like they were directed at another person. The true Yoriichi. Since he was his own person, they did not hurt as badly as they should have, but they still left an impact on the boy. It was truly getting ridiculous that he constantly lost himself into his thoughts. Not only that, but his demon body had still not gotten used to using his sword technics.

When his head got reattached with his body, Kokushibo was preparing himself to launch another devastating attack. Tanjiro focused his eyes on the demon with rising determination. His body was getting warmer, so much so that he could almost melt.

And that was when it happened.

The whole world changed. He could not longer see the trees and plants beside the river. The Upper Moon's body was strange; he could see all of his muscles, bones and articulations. This time, not wanting to space out again, the younger demon used this to predict with more ease the actions of his enemy. For that reason, he had not yet seen the color of the blade which had turned a bright red, nor the mark his face becoming brighter.
