Chapter one
The Drive In
Kimberly's POV:
Senior year had started it off great. My boyfriend was captain of the football team, one of my best friends was head cheerleader, I'd be going off to college next year. But all of that didn't seem to matter when the killings started. There was a man. Horace Pinker. We didn't know his name at the time but all everyone knew was there was a man, going around and killing people in their homes. And he didn't even have to break in. It was like as if he was let inside. That's all the public knew at this point. I sat at the counter, watching the news. My mother came down the stairs, shaking out her hair. "That's just awful." She said as she looked at the tv. I looked at her outfit and noticed she was dressed up. "Are you going somewhere?" I asked her. My mother would work jobs off and on but my grandfather, her father, would always send money and make sure we were ok. She never had to work. Ever since my dad left, my mom changed. Bianca Evans used to be someone women envied. Now she's a woman that people give pity to. "I was just going to go out and shop for a bit." "Mom, it's 7:00 in the morning." I stood up from the counter, dropping my spoon into my empty bowl of cereal. "Well, not right now of course. I'm going to have breakfast at the diner first. Then I'll probably head over to the mall." I put my bowl into the sink and went to grab my cheer outfit. "What time will you be home?" "I won't be home till late. I have cheer practice. And then I might go out with Rafe." She sighed at the mention of my boyfriend. "Bring him by, will you? He's such a nice boy. We could all have dinner. I'll cook something." I shrugged and said "I'll ask him." A knock was heard at the door and I walked over, opening it. Rafe stood there and I furrowed my eyebrows. "What're you doing here?" I asked. "Came to drive you to school." He replied. "Peggy was going to drive me." "Yeah, well, she got caught up with Jim. Jim called me and told me to give you a ride." I rolled my eyes at the mention of Jim who was Rafe's best friend. "Whatever." I mumbled. Rafe rolled his eyes and my mom came over, gushing over him. "Ms. Evans, how are you?" "I'm fine, thank you. Would you like to come to dinner tonight." I looked up at Rafe who said "as much as I want to, I can't. My dad has me helping him with his job later. Maybe another night?" "Oh, sure. What about Monday?" "Monday would be great." I kissed my mom on the cheek and ushered Rafe out of the house so we could go to school. I sighed as the car started and we were on our way. "Are you really helping your dad?" I asked. "Yeah. He needs me to help him with this new boat he got. It's brand new and we have to go pick it up. Plus, he's selling the other one so that's my job." Rafe said. I nodded and said "what about the drive in?" "What about it?" "Are we still going tomorrow?" "Yeah. Of course." Rafe grabbed my hand and brought it to his lips, kissing it. I smiled for the first time that morning. "There she is." I smiled again and nuzzled my face into Rafe's side as he stopped at a red light. "What's got you so moody this morning?" "The killings. On the news. It puts a sour taste in my mouth and makes me feel weird. I hate it. It scares me." Rafe grabbed me by my chin softly, pressing his lips to mine. "You don't have to be scared. I'll be there for you." I nodded and hugged him. Rafe leaned his head on top of mine and then the light turned green. A few minutes later we arrived at school. I noticed Jim and Peggy sitting at a table. My other best friend, Luna, sat with them. Rafe and I walked over to them. Peggy looked up at me and said "sorry about this morning. I meant to come and get you. But me and Jim.." "What happened?" I said. Jim and Rafe started to get loud as the two of them talked. "We had an argument. It was nothing serious. But, I'm still kinda sad." I leaned my head on Peggy's shoulder and Luna said "don't be sad, Peg. How's Rafe?" I applied some lip gloss to my lips and said "he's fine. Hasn't gotten in much trouble today." I smacked my lips and made sure they looked ok before putting my lip gloss and mirror away. "Eyes up, Pac Man!" Jim said. I looked over to see Jim standing in front of Rick. "My eyes were up. You just stand in front of me. Every day." Rick mumbled as he pushed past him. Rafe sniggered and Jim did the same. Bobby, Rick's brother looked over at them. Bobby was supposed to graduate last year but is repeating his senior year. He looked embarrassed to be back here but didn't care at the same time. Bobby was also on the football team with Jim and Rafe. Bobby was also a lot bigger than them. "Knock it off." He said. "Come on, O'Neill. We were just joking." Jim replied. Bobby rolled his eyes and walked into the school.
