chapter one ( unedited )
in the middle of your history class, as a video was playing on the TV, the channels changed on command, but no one had touched the remote. the class stared in confusion as the local news popped up in front of their eyes.
"doctors and scientists seemed to have attempted to make a vaccine, without government approval, and this experiment of theirs has gone severely wrong. all doctors from the facility have been found dead or missing, and the patients ... the patients are not normal." a video of a group fades onto the screen, their bodies disfigured and discolored.
"these patients have become zombielike due to the vaccine, please be wary of your surroundings until they have been dealt with." the recording is about to be shut off when the sound of screaming comes from behind the camera.
"AND THEY SEEM TO BE GROWING IN NUMBERS QUITE QUICK-" the newswoman is tackled by one of the discolored figures.
her voice is silenced by the time the creature emerges from below the table, mouth colored in blood, its own and hers mixed together. next, it charges at the camera. the recording finally ends.
fear envelopes the classroom, no, it envelopes the country. as each city and town is informed of the outbreak.
panicking and crying can be heard in every direction, people running onto the streets in a rush to return home to their loved ones for a last embrace. most people are confident they will not survive this, but others are seeing it as a prank.
idiots.
"y-y/n, i'm scared..." his voice rings in your head, and soon you're fleeing to the streets, down the pavement to your home. dodging crowds of people and praying you don't encounter a creature.
your prayers are answered when you arrive on your porch with no encounters, but your high hopes fall at the broken and bloody door laying in the doorway of your home. a home you share with your younger brother. tears sting your eyes as you ignore the door, flying up the stairs and into his room.
the sight you see will forever haunt you.
he's not dead, no, he's one of them now. undead. dead but animate.
your cute little brother, with his red dyed hair and bright eyes, cheeks that were always red from how happy he always was. the only person who kept you going in this world. now he stares at you with black holes for eyes, blood dripping from his eye sockets, and his ears, mouth, nose. his old tan skin is now a disgusting gray and his arms are twisted and his legs are snapped.
"no, no.. this can't be real. i'm just dreaming, aren't i?!" you scream, whether if it's to yourself or at your brother or at the world, you don't know.
screaming erupts from the corner of his room, and you see the one who turned him.
anger builds up in your chest, face burning red as tears stream down your cheeks. your brother stays still in the middle of the room, and even in this new hell, he doesn't hurt his older sibling.
the one who raised him when mother or father couldn't.
"you... I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID!" you search the room for anything that can be of use as a weapon, and your eyes land on your brother's dirty dishes. a knife, it's dull, you made it that way so he wouldn't injure himself.
but it should be able to kill if used with enough power, you're hoping so.
dashing towards the knife, hand outstretched, you wrap your fingers around the cool metal, immediately turning on your heel just in time to fend off the creature that had lunged after you. you stab it in the neck, releasing a shrill scream.
blood leaks from its neck. you're about to attack it again but a foot collides with its head, and it is beheaded. wow. you turn to your little brother, who is standing up with his foot outstretched. his face is blank.
"what the-" you trip over your untied shoelace and land on your behind, staring up at your undead brother who stares at you with no emotion. slowly and limply, he shuffles to his bed, where the sheets are now bloodied.
he grabs one of his crayons and his coloring notebook, scribbling something onto it in his messy, eight year old handwriting.
ripping the paper from the book, he limps over to you. pushing the paper to your chest, he gives you a thumbs up as you read it.
me strong.
me no evil.
me protect you.
tears stream down your cheeks once again and you leap up from the ground, hugging your younger brother close to you.
"i'm so happy... but, why are you not crazy like the others?" you question, confused. but he doesn't know either, shrugging in response, just as confused as you. deciding to drop the question for now, you straighten your back and walk to the window.
the streets are crowded with creatures, cold bodies, and running survivors.
hurriedly, you leap down the stairs and to your front door, remembering you did not close or lock it behind you, but when you arrive, it's too late. there is a boy at your door. a boy with the same school uniform as you.
he quickly shuts and locks the door behind him.
"who are you and why are you in my house?" you questions scaredly, holding up the bloody knife. his sees the knife and holds his shaky hands up.
"I'M MATSUNO CHIFUYU AND I MEAN NO HARM PLEASE LET ME USE YOUR HOME AS A PLACE TO HIDE FROM THE MON-" you lunge at him, making him shriek, and cover his mouth with the hand that is not holding the knife.
"why the fuck are you yelling?! you're going to attract them!" you sneer at him, making him look at her apologetically, "but fine, you can stay here for the time being, only because i've seen you around campus."
"thank you so much!" he bows, just as the stair creaks as your brother comes down the stairs.
"niko!" you say happily, before turning to chifuyu, feeling as if he may be uneasy since your brother, niko, is technically a monster.
you were partially right, seeing the look of horror on his face.
but his question makes your stomach churn.
"w-who are you talking to? there's no one there..." he says with a shaky voice, taking a weak step away from you, color draining from his face.
"w-what do you mean? i'm talking t-to my brother!" you retort, but you stutter due to the shock and fear crushing your lungs. oxygen is suddenly becoming difficult to obtain.
"but it's just you and me..."
A/N: this is kind of inspired by a webtoon i've read, it's called 'homesick' and if you haven't read it, you should!
