"Me too." The words ground out through his teeth but he held his tongue from saying anything more. Shane was glad Adam didn't show for more than a few reasons.

"You know..." Layla paused, tucking herself against Shane's chest like she couldn't even look at him. "You know I never slept with him right?"

"What?" Shane's fingers idly tangled with her hair behind her back as his mind tried to catch up.

Layla pulled away, looking up at him and his chest ached slightly at the space. As selfish as it was he didn't want to let her go, he just wanted her to himself for a little while longer.

Since Adam he'd seen less of her than usual, and he hated it. They'd only dated for a short while and he'd got the impression Layla wasn't that keen on the guy- perhaps the only reason Shane could stomach the two of them together. But it was Shane's biggest regret not noticing how badly he'd treated her earlier. Not doing something about it sooner.

At Layla's hip, Shane's hands gripped the fabric of her dress a little too tight. As if he could keep her there with him forever.

Her voice was soft as she spoke, her eyes locked onto Shane's despite the intensity of his stare. "I never actually had sex with him. It just didn't feel right." She looked away again, a blush creeping up her neck. He didn't like that. Not one bit. It made her look ashamed, embarrassed for someone else's actions as if she needed to confess to him. Did she really think he'd blame her? "Even when he'd get so angry that I'd wear nice outfits and then not sleep with him. I just-"

"He's an asshole. And he won't bother you again." She nodded in reply.

A shy smile tugged at her lips when he gave her a look that made sure she knew exactly who's fault it was, and it wasn't Layla's. Reminding her that he would always be on her side, she didn't even need to explain.

He could admit, it was a small relief that she hadn't let the fuckwad be apart of her in that way. But it wouldn't have changed anything for Shane, she was his and he was the one who'd failed her by not seeing who Adam really was from the start.

Layla didn't know anything about what happened the night Shane did find out.

How close he'd been to starting a fight and risking everything when he'd turned up at the shitface's door in the middle of the night. But despite his raging blood he'd managed to keep himself in check, the thought of being taken off campus away from Layla holding him back. And so far what he'd said seemed to have been enough to keep Adam away.

"I just felt like you needed to know." Layla concluded and quickly added,
"As my best friend and all."

"Right." What other way was there? Shane and Layla best friends forever. God that word sounded like a curse.

"Maybe it would have been different if it had been..." Her words trailed off into a long breath, the last part inaudible as her eyes watched him from somewhere distant.

Did she just say if it had been me?

Suddenly, her focus returned. Sharp eyes turned upon him with mischief as she tilted her chin.
"Hmmm, I wonder who would fall for who first? If we weren't friends."

"Best friends." Shane corrected and she rolled her eyes.

"I'm serious. If we were actually attracted to each other like that, and we didn't know each other, do you think we would have dated?" Of all the things she could have said he never would have expected that.

"I don't know."

"Too scared to get your heart broken, Carter?" Layla drawled. Yes, was the real answer. But Layla smirked, the burning challenge in her eyes contagious.

Shane chuckled softly, watching her for a second and taking in that smile before leaning down to whisper in her ear, "I think you'd find it was the other way around, Davis."

"You wouldn't be able to resist my charms." He straightened to his full height, arms crossed over his chest and flashed her a grin. Dimples making an appearance.

He watched her throat as she swallowed, her lips parting slightly before she regained herself.

"Want to make a bet?" The look she gave him from under her lashes was dangerous. It should have come with a heart attack warning because Shane was pretty sure that was what was happening to him.
