"Aaron! Aaron, please get down here and answer the door for your mother!" A voice shouted from downstairs. As far as it was, the voice was still loud and fairly obnoxious, not to mention impossible to obey. I cringed at the thought of opening the door to what I knew awaited me. The man in the window. I shuddered at the thought of seeing him, standing there, looking at me with such burning anger that it caused the temperature of the room to rise quite a bit. I broke out in sweat.
"Aaron! The door!" The voice shouted. It was mom but I didn't feel like I should obey. What if that man was the serial killer? What if he was going to kill us both and then dump our bodies into a river, eviscerating our bodies before he did so. He could chop us into little pieces and then - "AARON!" She yelled so loud I was wondering if the Chinese were looking for a child named Aaron in their villages.
I gulped down my heart which had risen into my throat, and grasped the knob to my door. I opened it slowly, and then sighed. I walked heavily down the stairs to reach the entry way of our house. Mother was coming from the basement just as I came from my room. We both reached for the door, but she smacked my hand out of the way. "Go ahead, make your mother do everything." She hissed, and pulled the door open with such force I thought it might come off of its hinges.
She smiled as soon as she saw him. And yes, it was him. He was naked - from the waist up. He wore khaki shorts and a pair of black underwear. I could tell because there was a single band of Fruit of the Loom showing above his belt line. He had on black Vans, but no socks. He obviously came in a hurry, especially since he was breathing hard, but trying not to show it. The rise and fall of his chest was giving it away - and oh my, that chest.
"Hello, there!" My mother said, leaning nonchalantly against the door, forgetting to open the screen door and invite him in. Not that I was complaining or anything. I was perfectly content with him staying far away from the inside of my house. "You must be the new neighbors." Finally she figured out the million dollar puzzle. I rolled my eyes.
The man just smiled, and eyed the screen door frame as if he were expecting it to fall down from where it stood to let him in. Conceited son of a - "Hello. My name is Frank, and yes. I am your new neighbor." He had his hands in his pockets now, as if he knew he was attractive. He didn't have abs - not quite. He had hints, but he was tanned, like most men in this state. He also had sizable pecks, which I couldn't help but notice, and my, how I enjoyed them, but I tried not to get distracted.
My mother noticed him looking at the screen door, and she realized she hadn't invited him in. "Oh!" She gasped, and slapped her hand against the handle to let it fly open. "Please, come on in!" She motioned for him to come inside, and so he did. And stood. Right next to me. With his hands still in his pockets.
My face turned a bright shade of hot pink as I looked down at the ground, suddenly interested with the black and gray tile patterns in the 20x20 entry way that was getting so small I felt like I was holed up in a broom cupboard with another two people inside. Didn't mom turn on the air conditioning? I was sweating again.
"Aaron, why don't you say hello to Frank?" She sounded too elementary about it. Like I was a little kid and not a high school graduate on his way to college. Like this was some sophisticated business man and compared to him, I was just a sixteen year old kid that knew nothing about life. I knew plenty about it. More than my mother knew, more than I cared to know. By this time, it was the anger that was making me hot, and not the embarrassment.
I looked up at him, dead on in the eyes as I said my name. I couldn't even hear my own voice over the rush of the blood in my ears. It was deafening. I smirked when he held out his hand. I fearlessly took it, shook it with a firm grip and then turned back to my mother, grabbed my keys off of a key rack to my right, and exited the room, quickly. The screen door slammed shut behind me, but by the time my mother could excuse herself from Frank and yell at me, I was already in the car, door shut, car started and music cranked up.
When I backed out I glanced at the house from the corner of my eye, and saw pretty boy Frank leave, a grin plastered across his face like some damn school boy. He waved good-bye to my mother and then waved at me before walking back to his house. I gave a low guttural growl at him, despite the fact that he couldn't hear me and drove off, tires squealing against the pavement. I didn't give a rat's ass.
Out of habit because of driving, I took a peek in my rear-view mirror just to make sure that no one was behind me to shift into the next lane. I didn't expect anyone to be there because it was a small town, and on an afternoon like this, everyone was either sleeping or preoccupied with other people to be on the road. I least expected Frank to be behind me.
Sure enough, he was certainly trailing me, keeping at least fifty feet between the two cars. I hope I wasn't going to be stalked by this guy. I saw him naked in his room from my own - did he think I was some sort of creep or something? Did he think that he was going to get an apology out of me? Was he going to beat the crap out of me?
I sort of hope he would. At least then I would have reason to hate him. At the moment, I had none, and I knew it. Dammit, this was already getting ridiculous. I pulled into the parking lot of a dine-in burger joint, parked, turned off the car, and got out. I paid no attention what-so-ever to Frank as he parked next to me and mirrored my own movements, not that he meant to.
I walked past him, ignoring the audible tsk he gave me when I didn't acknowledge him. I waltzed into the burger joint and sat down at the counter, folding my hands together and placing them on the counter, waiting for someone to take my order. It was actually quite a cliche place. The color theme was black, white and red. 15 red leather bar stools stood in a line along the white and black checkered marble counter, with little red and black trays off at the far end. I sat at the far end, at the very last seat. I didn't want to be talked to by anyone other than the waiter/ress.
I knew that hope wouldn't last. In fact, as soon as the girl came up to ask what I wanted to eat, Frank thought it would be a good idea to sit right next to me. The girl - Nora as her nameplate suggested - looked skeptically at the two of us, and then nodded her head slowly. "Um, lunch for two, then?" She asked uncertainly. She had a pad and a red and black pen out, but she was tapping it nervously.
I opened my mouth to speak. To tell her no, this was just some random asshole that decided it would be nice to sit next to me. Of course, I wasn't allowed that liberty.
"Yes, please. Can we get the special?" His voice was sweet, almost like he was seducing her. I raised an eyebrow but didn't look over at him. "Oh, and the special drink, please," he said, and without surprise added, "On me."
I rolled my eyes once more and turned to face him. My eyes bore into his like lasers, but he didn't seem fazed. I was sure I looked mad, and indeed I was pissed off. I just wanted a normal lunch with no weird men joining me and paying for me. Especially when I didn't know him and didn't have enough money to pay him back. I was just going to go off the dollar menu that they had, but what he ordered was ten times more expensive.
I opened my mouth to tell him off, but again I was rudely cut off. He cocked his head to the side and narrowed his eyes. He put his hand to his chin as if he were in deep thought when he asked very seriously, "Aaron, are you gay?"
