Story 9 - Part 1

Unknown Character POV

I felt something weighing on me. It was heavy. I woke up to see my little brother lying on my chest. "Already awake?" I ask him, sitting up as he clung to me. I looked around. It was currently 5:06 A.M. Oh, that's right. "This isn't the apartment we lived in with Mom and Dad, is it? You couldn't sleep." 

I stared at the curtains for a bit before I was startled by the door slamming open. "Are you still in bed?!" The chairwoman yelled. "Get up this instant!" "But it's only a little past five..." I muttered, confused. 

"If there's one thing I despise, it's wasted time!" She stated. "Enough of your lollygagging! Eat your breakfast, pick up your lunch, and get to school, post-haste!" "I have prepared your breakfast and lunches for the day." Saikawa said. 

"As of today, you'll be spending all your time during morning and afternoon breaks looking after the babies in the daycare." The chairwoman informed me. "Is that understood?"  "Yes ma'am!" I said. That's when my little brother grabbed her hair and shook it. "Shaggy..." He admired. 

"Who are you calling shaggy?! If you say that one more time, I'll give you the same hairstyle!" The chairwoman shouted. "I'm so sorry, ma'am!" I said. 

The chairwoman walked over to the door as soon as Saikawa left. "On another subject," She said. "Regarding your uniform..."  "I have less than a year of middle school left, so I might as well wear my old one..." I informed her, getting up from my bed and carrying my brother. 

"Just pipe down and wear that one." She said, pointing her walking stick in the direction of a navy blue uniform hanging on a hook. "You're a student of my academy now. You will wear the uniform." "Thank you, ma'am!" I bowed, still holding onto Kotaro. 

The chairwoman left the room and closed the door. I set my brother on the bed and put on my new uniform. It was a perfect fit. I felt tears coming and I wiped them away. She picked the perfect size for me.  

I guess this is our real home now. I smiled at Kotaro, who merely stared at me in return. "Hey, Kotaro. Let's get you dressed too so we can get going."

"Hey, that uniform look good on you, Ryu-chan." The man working for the daycare centre complimented. "Thank you." I replied. "Though I'm shocked that the old cheapskate bought you a middle school uniform you'll only be wearing for a few months." He said, yawning after as he made his way to the middle of the room. 

"The chairwoman isn't a cheapskate at all." I said to him. Then, my eyes travelled to the clock. "Oh. I'd better get going."  "See ya later." Usaida yawned back, comfortably lying down on the floor with a panda pillow supporting his head. 

I kneeled down, facing my brother. "Kotaro." I said to him, getting his attention away from his picture book and at me. "I'll be back for lunch. Wake up Usaida-san if you need anything, okay?" I got back up and closed the door behind me as I left for school.  

As I walked through the hallway, I see other students looking at me and begin to whisper and giggle. It was a little embarrassing. People seem to be laughing as I pass by..."Hey--
