Backstory

Reginald Hargreeves got his hands on a second set of 7 kids, but they were much more powerful and dangerous than the known umbrella academy. He kept them hidden away, mostly in cages or confinement chambers like the one Vanya was put in. The hidden 7 were called the crimson academy but still had the umbrella tattoo. He would let them out of the confinement chambers when he got away from the others, allowing them time for training though theirs was much harsher than their "siblings." They weren't allowed outside, most of them were sickly and pale.

 When the original, well known Umbrella academy failed, Reginald  put a robot in place to watch them but he underestimated their powers and they easily managed to over power the robot and escape. Neo went to the streets, meeting Klaus and getting involved in drugs. They have the Hello/Goodbye tattoo on his hands as well, they let Klaus tattoo him once when they were high.  On a sort of impulse, they dyed his hair bright red after leaving the crimson academy.

Eventually, after Reginald died, he sent two messages out, one to the Umbrella Academy and the other to the Crimson academy. They both managed to escape without dying in the world ending. Neo was one of the more powerful people. After the events of season two, the Crimson academy and the Umbrella academy collide and they notice their similarities, and team up against the sparrow academy 

Some other parts for clarification, their powers are sort of unpredictable and attached to their mind, so any thoughts are inside. Anxiety, depression and thoughts like that are all there and sometimes can make their way into projections, forming a sort of monster that infects the projection.. Neo can use other peoples thoughts to go into their head but only if he can touch the other person and the other person is willing. Once they let someone into his mind but the infection of negative feelings took over the other person and they died in Neo's mind, leading them to stop using his powers, stop interacting with people and start doing drugs.
