While the Greeks glorified the penis, they actually preferred a small, thin penis as on an adolescent exercising at the gymnasium. Greek artists showed their contempt for foreigners and slaves by depicting them with large penises. The Romans, however, respected and coveted large penises.
While a male whose testicles are removed or rendered inoperative after puberty loses the ability to produce sperm and a natural appetite for intercourse, he may still have the ability to have an erection. This made certain men known as castrati, such as opera singer Farinelli (1705-1782), a favorite among bored, wealthy housewives.[8]
