Sophia woke up one weekend morning in a panic. She remembered she had a report to do about a day in her life she will never forget. It was a Sunday morning. Her report was due the next day, Monday. Sophia threw on her clothes and ran out to scarf down her breakfast. After eating, she ran into her office room and took a seat at the typewriter. She stared aimlessly at the paper. She couldn't think. That's when she noticed her purple bird pecking at the window. Sophia had decided to call him Indigo. Since he was in fact indigo.
"Indigo! I'm so glad you're here! I really need some help." Sophia said, opening up the window for the bird.
Indigo started to sing and chirp to her.
"I should write about when Grandma passed? I like that! Come help me." Sophia sat down at the desk and started typing as Indigo sang.
Sophia and Indigo spent nearly the whole day in that office. Sophia typed fast while Indigo sang. Once Sophia finished her project. She thanked Indigo for his help and opened the window for him to fly out.
"Mom, can you proofread my paper for school?" Sophia asked as she walked into her living room.
"Sure honey. What is it about?" Her mom asked, taking the paper.
"We had to write about a day that we will never forget so Indigo helped me out and we wrote about the day Grandma passed away." Sophia said, taking a seat next to her mom.
"Indigo?" Her mom asked.
"My bird. The purple one. I named him Indigo." Sophia said smiling.
"Oh, right. The bird. Well let's see what you got." Her mom said putting on her reading glasses.
While her mother read the paper, Her facial expression continued to change. She would look happy, then sad, then confused.
"Wow. That's very deep. Did you write this whole thing?" Her mother asked her.
"Well, Indigo told me what to say. But I did write most of it myself. I think" Sophia said, standing up and taking the paper.
"Do you have to present it to your class?" Her mother asked, worried.
"Yes, why?"  Sophia said, looking upset.
"I think they will like it. You will probably get a good grade on it too. It's very well written. Oh, and I made you some lunch. It's in the kitchen. Go eat it." Her mother said and pulled out a small notebook and pen from her pocket.
"Okay! Thank you." Sophia said and pranced into the kitchen to eat her lunch.
"Day 4 of the bird. 96 days left." her mother whispered, getting teary eyed as she wrote a number "4" on a page titled, Purple Bird. She then drew a dash after the title and wrote "Purple Bird-Indigo".

The next morning, Sophia got up feeling excited and got ready for school. She put on her favorite trousers and her favorite shirt. She slicked her hair back into a tight ponytail and added a headband that matched her shirt. She put on a pair of plain white shoes and went to the kitchen for breakfast. When she walked in, she found that her mother wasn't cooking, nor was there any breakfast. So she grabbed some cereal and had that instead.
Before she left for the bus, she walked around the house looking for either her mom or her dad, but neither of them were anywhere. She wrote a little note and left the house.
Indigo was outside waiting for her. He began chirping and singing when he saw her. He tweeted and chirped all the way to the bus stop. When the bus got there, Sophia waved goodbye to her little bird and got on the bus.
For the whole day at school he couldn't wait to present her paper to her class. When it finally came time, she instantly volunteered to go first.
"I'll go first!" Sophia called, raising her hand.
"Ok then, it looks like Sophia is first. Come on up and tell us what your paper is called." Her teacher said and gestured to a small podium at the front of the room.
"Ok. My paper is called, 'Grandma's Blue Bird'." Sophia began.
"I used to be very close with my grandma. That is, until she passed away in September of 1952. Months before she passed, she talked about a little blue bird who would come to her more often everyday. The day she passed, we were sitting in her lounge room at her house. She told me that she saw the bird come in through the window. She talked about how the blue bird was sitting on the armrest of my chair and how it suddenly began to grow. 'Sophia, he's growing! How can you not see him?' she'd say. Suddenly she began nodding her head and gasping. She then said 'I guess it's my time. I understand. Goodbye my dearest Sophia. I will forever be waiting for you.' I was confused i didn' know what she meant. She closed her eyes and took a big breath in. She never breathed out again. I yelled for my mom and she then had to explain to me what happened as people from the hospital rushed in and out of the house. 'Everyone in our family has seen a small colorful bird appear about 100 days before their passing. It follows them around until eventually it carries them away to heaven. Before your grandpa passed, he talked about seeing a little orange bird. And now your grandma talked about a blue one. Someday when you are older, you will see a little bird who will follow and carry you away to heaven but you can't be afraid you must stay strong..." Sophia began to trail off.
She stopped reading. She looked at the classroom's windows and noticed her Indigo looking through them. Pure horror crossed her face. She dropped her paper and ran out of the classroom.
"Um. does anyone know what happened?" her teacher asked.
"I'll be back." Sophia's friend Julie said and ran out to look for Sophia.
