Liv spent Christmas Eve and day alone as her mom worked a double shift both days. She was tempted to spend it with The Hendersons, but the thought of seeing Dustin was almost as terrifying as seeing Steve. After all, her best friend was torn to shreds just as often as her ex-boyfriend.

She hadn't heard from Steve since she broke up with him. She expected at least a single phone call, but her phone sat against the receiver, dead to the world. She picked it up once to make sure it was working. Her heart fell when she heard the dial tone.

Liv rang in the New Year alone in her bed, listening to the count down on her radio as she held Rufus who shook in terror at the fireworks. She pretended she was helping him, but really he was helping her too.

Dustin called once a day, wanting to talk to her. She told him after the fifth call she needed space. He didn't listen and persistently called her wanting to hang out or check up on her. After two weeks of straight calls, she unplugged the phone.

It was easier that way.

School started back up. It was her last semester of high school. Others were excited as they began their count down to graduation. Liv didn't see how she could possibly make it to graduation.
