Down to Business

5 things popped into Camila's heads when she saw Luz and her friends.

One,  Luz was back. Her sweet baby girl was finally back. Camila did not even wait to be introduced to Luz's friends. She grabbed Luz and pulled into a bear hug that would put real bears to shame. She was so relieved to have her little girl back. She wanted to squeeze her and never let her go. She was so happy that tears were in her eyes.

Two, her friends were there.  Okay, cool. That must mean Luz and her friends beat the bad guy. Time to celebrate!

Three, while Luz was smiling, she looked absolutely exhausted and miserable. Her friends looked the same way. A girl with purple hair, while exhausted, stood at attention, blank expression on her face. A girl with glasses stood next to her. She looked as deflated and exhausted as the rest of them. A older boy with blond hair had his arm around a younger boy. The younger boy looked like he had just finished crying.  Does that mean they did not win?

Four, none of the parents for Luz's friends were there.

Five, she and Vee needed to prepare more food for dinner and some beds for the kids.

As soon Two through Five registered in Camila's mind,  her smile disappeared. Time to get down to business.

"Let's get all of you out of the rain. We can do introductions during dinner." Camila held the door open and five children shuffled inside. The girl with purple hair started taking off her shoes. The two boys  and the girl with glasses followed suit. All four of them went to put their shoes outside on the porch. Camila smiled. "Don't worry about your shoes, the floor needs to be cleaned anyway."

The boys and the girl with glasses nodded and grabbed their shoes. The girl with purple hair blushed profusely and followed the others.

"Luz!" Vee exclaimed. She went over and hugged Luz. "What happened? Are you okay?"

Before Luz could say anything, Camila put a hand on Luz and Vee's shoulders. They were already exhausted and miserable. Explaining what happened would cause tears. Tears from Luz could cause tears from the other kids. If there were going to be tears, it needed to be after all five kids got food in their stomachs and a full might of sleep.

"You can tell us what happened in the morning," Camila said. "Right now, you all are going to eat, wash up, and go to bed. Understood!"

All six children stood at attention and nodded. They even smiled a bit. "Understood!"

"Good. Vee, cocina mas comida (cook more food)," Camila ordered. She turned to Luz and the others. "You five, go wash your hands. Dinner will be ready in 20 minutes. And Luz, get you and your friends some towels to dry up with."

"Yes, Mom," Luz said. "Come on guys, I'll teach you how to use the sink." They all followed Luz into the bath room in the hallway. The youngest seemed to perk up even more, looking almost excited.

They don't know how to use a sink? Camila thought. Así es (that's right)! Vee said people on the Boiling Isles use magic for everything. That much mean stuff like the sink totally foreign to them.

The youngest ' 'oohs' and 'aahs' as Luz explained how to use the sink confirmed her thoughts. As Camila and Vee worked on dinner, Camila thought about other things that might be foreign to Luz's friends. She made a mental note to ask Luz about that tomorrow.

"Dinner's ready," Camila said. In the time that Vee and Camila were cooking, Luz took her friends on a tour of the house. The way they all stared at Luz and the television when she taught them how to use it was so adorable! The two boys went all starry-eyed. Which made Camila feel relieved. She was glad they were all feeling better. Although she was a bit worried about why the purple-haired girl was still so tense.

"Vee, can you set the table?" Camila asked Vee.

"Don't worry Mom," Luz said. "We took care of it."

Camila turned around to see that Luz was right. The table was almost done being set. Her friends and her were setting down plates. The girl with glasses made the plant on the table grow vines and put all the cups in place. Camila yelped in surprise when she saw that.

"Sorry," the girl said sheepishly.

"Oh, don't worry about it, cariño (sweetie), I was just a little surprised." Camila said. "Come, ven a comer (come, eat). I'm sure you all must be starving."

All seven of them sat down and ate up. Camila and Vee had made chili with rice. All Luz and her friends had three bowls each. Except for the purple haired girl, she stopped after one bowl. She stood up straight with her hands in her lap while everyone was hunched over their bowls, eating like it was their last meal.

Luz noticed it too. "Come on, Amity. Eat up. Mom is a really good cook."

So that's her name. "Yes," Camila agreed. "Por favor (please), eat up. I'm sure you're hungry."

"Yes, ma'am," Amity said, dutifully. Camila passed Amity the chili and rice. Amity put one scoop of chili and one scope of rice into her bowl. She ate slowly and methodically. Camila and Luz shared a look of concern and continued eating.

After everyone emptied their bowls for the last time, Camila spoke up. All six kids listened attendantly. "So, now that you all have some food in your stomachs, let me introduce myself. Like you all know, I'm Luz's mother. My name is Camila Noceda. Can you all tell me your names?"

The girl with glasses spoke first. "My name is Willow Park. It's nice to meet you."

The younger boy spoke next. "My name is Gus Porter. You have a nice sink." Camila had to smile at that.

The older boy went third. "My name is Hunter. Former member of the Emperor's Coven and former Golden Guard. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Finally, Amity nervously introduced herself. "M-my name is Amity Blight. It is a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for the food and for letting us come into your house."

"It's very nice to meet you all," Camila said.

"Amity is also my girlfriend," Luz chimed in, proudly.

"Girlfriend?" Camila asked in surprise. She looked at Amity, who's entire face turned pink. Camila's face quickly turned from surprise to utter joy. "¡Dios mío (My goodness)! It's so nice to meet you!"

Camila stood up and went over to Amity to give her a hug. Amity's eyes widened in surprise before she hugged Camila back. After a few seconds, Camila let go. "Was this why you were so tense before?"

Amity looked surprised again. "O-oh, was it that obvious? I'm sorry."

"Don't be," Camila said with a big smile on her face.  "It's always nerve-racking to meet your partner's parents."

Amity smiled. Everyone in the room had a big smile.

"Not to be a downer," Hunter said. "But is no one going to say anything about the basilisk that made us dinner?
