Tenya wakes up in his own bed to the sound of knocking. It's early, he's groggy, and he must've slept in without his alarm clock. His brother pokes his head in.
"Hey, Tenya, Dad made breakfast. You wanna come down?"
He nods, and Tensei closes the door to give him some privacy.
Tenya yawns as he makes his way down the stairs, the smell of fresh food doesn't help at all with his tiredness, but it makes him question the occasion. Hell, Tenya can't even remember the last time they all had a meal together like this.
The boy greets his father with a hug, Kenji looking through a cabinet when his youngest son walks up to him with his arms outstretched. He welcomes him, musing Tenya's hair as he pulls out some more pepper.
"Hey there, kiddo. You want anything for breakfast?"
Tenya hums while he thinks, "Just some eggs, please."
"Alright then. Be sure to get your medicine first."
He hums again, this time as a response. Taking a couple bottles and a syringe from another cabinet, as well as a glass of water, Tenya starts with his insulin followed by a couple of pills.
He overhears his brother and mother talking about the agency. They've both been taking leadership roles since retiring, and have been keeping themselves busy with the understaffing crisis following the war. Tenya remembers he hadn't seen anyone else from the agency in a while and wonders how they've been doing these past months.
Tenya washes down the last of his supplements with some water, and his father passes him his plate and some silverware. He looks at it in confusion, eyeing the toast Kenji added to his plate. "Since when was I ever allowed to have toast?"
"Mother?" Tenya asked, setting the suspicions plate on the table, "Did something happen while I was at school?"
She paused, taking the moment to clear her throat. "Yes, a couple things, but I was hoping to discuss it after breakfast," She said sternly.
Tenya knew better than to pester any further, so he sat down to start eating. It was some simple scrambled eggs, a little bit of ketchup on the side, and then the random pieces of toast. To be honest, he wasn't a fan of scrambled eggs or ketchup, nonetheless together, but that's what he got for not specifying. And has he even had toast before? His family's been strict with his diet ever since he was little, so he doesn't quite remember.
Tensei quickly swallowed down his food to start a conversation. "Speaking of which, Tenya. How has school been? They still haven't let you guys out for winter break yet."
"It's alright. I think they're just trying to make up for the time we've missed, but we haven't been given much work."
"And, lemme guess, make up for paranoia by reassuring the parents with a party?"
"I guess so. Though it was mostly for our sakes," Tenya replied, eating another bite of his breakfast.
"Really? I guess since-" Tenno cut him short with a jab to his shoulder.
"Boys, finish your breakfast before you start talking. Alright?"
They both nodded and the family ate in silence. By the time their mother put away her plate, Tensei had gone halfway through his seconds while Tenya could only pick away at his egg scraps. "Maybe I should try a piece of toast?" He asked himself.
"Well then," She started, "We're all nearly done, right?"
Tenya nodded vigorously, very happy with his toast. Kenji simply laid back in his chair with a thumbs up and Tensei continued to work away at his plate.
