Chapter 26: Miracle
A faint light from the nearly full moon passed through the glass window of Calgary's room. He insisted me to stay here and use his bed where I could smell his scent in every corner so I wouldn't crave for him that much. But his scent alone was not enough to comfort me. I need to feel his warm skin. My face on his hard chest. His minty breath on my hair.
I wanted him, but I had to wait another day before he and Ariz would come home.
My hands pulled the sheets up to my face with hopes that if his scent would suffocate me, I would finally fall asleep, but minutes had already passed, and despite my body feeling so sore due to the intense training I had with Alpha Lawrence earlier, I still didn't feel tired to rest.
Giving up, I heaved a sigh and decided to go downstairs to get myself a glass of milk. I spotted Alpha Lawrence in the kitchen with a bottle of whiskey he was still contemplating whether to drink or not.
I jumped down the last staircase and walked straight to the kitchen. "Mind if I have some, Alpha?"
He smirked. "Silly. You never tried alcohol."
"Yeah, but maybe that will put me to sleep faster."
I grabbed a glass for myself then sat next to him. He stared at me for seconds, probably waiting for me to take back what I said. When he realized I was serious, he breathed out before he opened the bottle to pour me some.
"Just a little. I don't want you throwing up all day during tomorrow's training," he said before he poured some for himself.
"Cheers," I joked.
He shook his head before he gently hit my glass with his.
I took one sip then stopped as the burning liquor made my face crumple. "Goodness! How can you finish a dozen bottle of this?"
His lips broke for a teasing smile. "That's what I'm talking about. Go grab yourself some milk. You're still a fucking baby."
Realizing that I really cannot handle alcohol, I stood up and went to the fridge with a fresh glass. I returned to my seat with my glass of milk then drank some. Alpha Lawrence stared at me with a hint of longing and regret, as if there was something going on inside his head that he was not ready to put into words.
He's been this way since he gave me back my Mom's necklace...
I licked the stain of milk on my lips before I put the glass down. "Do you think Calgary and Ariz can convince the witch in Remorse? I heard she's a high-rank Laurel member."
Witches nowadays are rare. In fact, I didn't even think they still exist. Most of them lost their powers when the oak tree that symbolizes their existence died during the end of war in Remorse District. The only ones I believed left with powers are the Laurels. The reincarnated members of the first coven of witches in the world.
"She is, but we know people in Remorse. They are more considerate than the rest of our kind. We shouldn't be bothered by it. What we must worry about is the upcoming mating night." He took a sharp breath before he met my eyes. "Did Calgary tell you?"
My forehead creased. "About what?"
"That the council refused to grant his request to let him decide who's gonna be his new Luna?"
I shook my head. "He didn't. I thought they already agreed since he promised to mark me on the mating night."
"That son of a bitch is gonna get himself executed."
Shiver trailed down my spine as pain sipped into every limb in my body. No. We can't let what nearly happened to Alpha Lawrence and Mom to happen to us. I would never put Calgary in a situation that would cost him his life.
My chest rose and fell. "If I will bow to him as my Alpha during the selection, will I be able to join the fight?"
Alpha Lawrence stared at me with worry. "You can. There's no restriction about the fight. Even outsiders and humans are welcome to join as long as they are willing to die inside the arena. Why? Are you planning to fight for the Luna position?"
"I am." I swallowed the lump in my throat. "I know Claivan's she-wolves are stronger because unlike in Zenios, they never had a mixed race. But I'd rather try my luck than put him in danger because of me."
I saw how the pain of yesterday's memories glisten in Alpha Lawrence's eyes. "And if you will lose?"
My expression soften. "Then..." I drew in a sharp breath when my chest started to tighten. "Then I will leave him."
His hands turned into a tight fist that his knuckles became pale. "You have no idea how painful that's going to be for him. Don't let history repeat itself and end up regretting everything."
With my heart breaking by the thought of me leaving Calgary's side once I lose, I forced a smile at my mother's greatest love. "You and Cal are different, Alpha. Mom and I are not the same as well. Calgary and I only know each other for a short period of time. It might not hurt that much for the both of us."
"You don't know what you're talking about, Nadine. Time is irrelevant when it comes to love. It's been years, but everything still hurts as if I just lost your mother yesterday. Don't make another heart break for the same reason." His eyes flickered with immense pain. "We're going to train really hard and you will win. You hear me? You're going to win."
I swallowed hard as I nodded. "I'm gonna win."
He held me by my arm with regret. "Ahma told me the truth earlier. Your mother was pregnant when she went here to hide from me. There's... there's a chance that you are mine... and if you are..." His voice cracked. "If you are mine, I will never let you have the same fate as your mother. I don't care if it's going to take me a lifetime to earn your forgiveness for everything that I've done to you, but I promise you that I will give you the training that you need in order to win the selection." He drew in a sharp breath. "With or without an Alpha blood in your veins, you're gonna be this place's Luna... one way or another."
My chest tightened and the corners of my eyes started to burn. "And what if... I won't win... even if... I'm really your... your daughter? Will you... will you hate me even more?"
"No." His voice faded as if his throat locked because of the pain brewing in his chest. "I'll fucking convince Calgary to fight for you... and once he did..." He reached for my cheek to wipe the tear rolling down my face. "I'm going to lay down my life to protect you from everyone who will ever try to harm you. That, my miracle, is a promise..."
