The sun was shining.

The birds were singing.

The breeze was just right.

Everything was warm and bright and perfect.

And Syd hated it.

She stuffed her hands in her pockets, eyeing the building in front of her in apprehension. Blackwell was one of the best schools for those with creative abilities despite the isolation of the small town of Arcadia Bay. Syd had just won a full ride scholarship after her mom — ugh — told her to enter a contest using some of her drawings.

The last thing she expected was to earn a scholarship when one of the teachers was apparently there to judge and had brought pictures of her drawings to the principle.

And that's how Syd had went from full-blown-city girl to trapped-in-a-small-town-where-the-most-interesting-thing-that-happens-is-the-spoiled-milk-in-the-gas-station girl.

Not exactly how Syd had pictured her life to be going.

But, honestly, she should've known something else would happen to her.

She wasn't the luckiest person in the world.

In fact, Syd would go as far as to say she was unlucky.

Syd sighed and rolled her shoulders, headphones covering her ears as she scratched at the marks along her left wrist — they had been itching the moment her mom had drove past the Arcadia Bay sign a few days ago.
