What is Islam?

"Islam" means "submission to the will of God." Followers of this religion are called Muslims.

Muslims worship one God, Allah.

The prophet Muhammad (PBUH: Peace be upon him) is the carrier of the message of Islam to the whole world, the last of all prophets.

These are the basic two principles of Islam: The belief that only one God exists, and that Muhammad is the prophet sent by God to humanity.

Therefore, Shahadatain (Declaration of Faith) is to declare there is only one God, Allah, and that Muhammad is his messenger.

Shahadatain's pronounciation in Arabic:

"Ashadu an la ilaha illa-llah, wa ashadu anna muhammadan rasul ullah."

Translation: "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
