My Fiancée

Be my fiancée, come my queen, in your bun I'll place a flower of stars

On your ears I'll hang the crescent, of the Choithi's* third moon

On your neck I'll adorn, bright maiden

Of birds in flight, a hanging necklace

A lightning strike ribbon I will braid into your cloud-dark hair

With Chandon wood drenched in moon rays, I will wash your skin

With the red of Lord Ram's bow*, I will paint your feet*

With the seven harmonies of my song

I will adorn your wedding bed

Following you always sings the bulbul of my poetry

*Choithi is the last month of the Bengali year.

*A rainbow is often called Lord Ram's bow.

*Painting the sides of feet red is a fashion in Bangladesh.
