Light flickered behind my closed eye lids but I resisted the impulse to see. His warm breath hit my face lightly in short bursts. I shivered softly despite how much I tried to hide it. I didn't have to open my eyes to know that his lips had pursed into a wry half smile or that his eyes hadn't once left me.

"I'm sorry," were the first words he had spoken in a long time and they made my breath hitch in my throat and my heart stop beating.

After a beat I let my eyes flutter open and as soon as they did they locked onto his. My gaze held his emerald green eyes that flickered with tiny specs of gold for a second, but that second was enough. I saw regret, hurt, pain, and another emotion I had seen hidden in his gaze before that I now finally understood. And it wasn't enough.

My eyes closed shut and a pained smile etched the corners of my lips before settling down in a resolute line.

"You're not," my words were raspy and hurt, but they resonated with absolute conviction.

I knew he had opened his mouth to respond but I cut him off.

"But you will be."

And with that I disappeared.
