My hands shake on the steering wheel, my hands at 10 and 2. My driving instructer sits in the passenger seat with a clipboard and pen in her hands, preparing to be driven around by a sixteen year old girl trying to get her license with the off chance that I kill both of us on my way.
After several minutes, she instructs me to put on my seatbelt, adjust my mirrors, and start the engine. After all those things are finished, she tells me I may start driving. I slowly hit the gas pedal, after looking both ways, and start to roll forward.
I drive quickly but carefully, trying my best to act as though I am a grown adult who has driven around over a thousand times. I stop at lights and stop signs, and always look left and right before turning.
I get to a turn lane, but just as I am about to turn, a car stops right in the middle of the intersection to where I cannot see what is in the direction I'm turning. Horns start honking, and I honk mine too, but my instructor tells me that I need to turn.
"Can you not see the car right in front of me?" I ask her kindly.
"Rocky, after you pass the test, you will be driving everywhere. So you need to learn to deal with these things. Just try to look through that car's windows and see any cars," she replies.
I sigh, then lean forward to see through the car's dark tinted windows, and do not see anything I need to watch out for. I start to drive forward to turn. Then I see a large truck coming straight toward us, and hear a big crash before everything goes completely dark.
