I avoided Tonye like the plague. Guilt was all I felt. And one thing I knew about guilt was that when one was rotten to others, it meant you were on the path to becoming a zombie. Literally.
After the second kissing incident, in which I made a fool of myself, I went back home — to his house and did my best to avoid being in the same room as he. It was his sister's birthday, and we had to see each other. A part of me told me to cancel and leave the catering to Grace since they had paid me, but the other vindictive part wanted me to see through with my plan. Tonye and his family had to go down one way or the other, so my feelings needed to be checked.
My black straight-bone wig covered most of my facial features, which was a perfect way to hide in such an elite crowd. Simi will take no chances. I looked at the mirror, dusted my blue pleated Ankara gown, and adjusted the top to ensure I set my bosom straight to catch Tonye's attention. "All checked. Now go kill them." I winked at myself and headed downstairs.
As I walked down the stairs, I found Tonye waiting for me at the end. He stood there in his suit, which emphasized his broad shoulders and gave him the appearance of an influential figure. He might have loved saying he was nothing but a beta, but here and now, he was nothing less than an alpha male. Underneath all that greatness lay the muscles I felt when we shared the kiss. The kiss.
As I stepped down, he smiled and held out his hand. "Simi, you look amazing."
I flashed a smile back. "Thank you. You don't look bad yourself."
"Thanks to you," he replied, showing me his wristwatch.
When I held his hand, fluttering sensations burst through my chest and shot straight down to my stomach. I'm in deep shit.
He looked into my eyes and tried to say something, but nothing came out. As much as his lips looked inviting, I wouldn't let them get the best of me. I had a mission and needed a clear head to see it through.
"Let's get going, shall we?" I finally said.
He nodded, and we walked out the door. We got into the car waiting outside, followed by a police escort.
After a drive of fifteen minutes, which I was totally not timing, we got to the garden party. It was bright and sunny with blue skies and sweetly rising heat. The scent of flowers made the air feel fresh and bubbly, like the butterflies swimming in my stomach. They beautified the garden with a long table and chairs on either side. Guests were busy socializing as the socialites they were.
My eyes darted to the catering corner and saw that everything had been set up and the servers I hired were doing their job, ensuring everything was in order. I didn't want to mix myself in the crowd, so I turned to Tonye and said, "I think I should go make sure the catering is going smoothly. We don't want any hiccups."
He cradled my hand, keeping me from moving. "Don't worry. I told Grace to handle it. I want you to meet my elder sister and her brother-in-law."
Ah. Boma Williams, the matriarch of the family. The one who used power as a protector of the family. Many saw her as the dominant one in her marriage — I saw a woman who didn't tolerate nonsense. As we approached her, my hands became fidgety and wouldn't settle.
