Reunited in Death

Amir El Amari is a living secret. A life of espionage made him wary. Dangerous people were after him, so he must be an enigma.

It was not such a tragedy to always wear a mask and lose his identity. Cypher relished the mystery. He had lived this way for so long, he didn't even consider the thought of trusting his team with personal details. Such as the subject of his family, some secrets were too painful to speak of.

Cypher thought of them often on the field. They taught him the consequences of the spy life. His greatest mistake and greatest joy was loving them. Because of them, he no longer feared death.

He thought of them now as he loaded his Operator. A gentle breeze, fresh and salty, cooled his skin beneath the mask and gloves. He breathed in deeply and adjusted his wide brimmed hat.

From his high perch on the B site wall, Cypher kept an eye on everything, and planted cameras in corners where he could not.

Sage paced below him, tall and immovable like a mountain, and delivered instructions through the comm. Breach and Reyna covered A site while Sova watched mid. All they could do was wait for the incoming attack.

Cypher didn't like to be distracted in the middle of an op, especially during the sentry stage. It was his and Sova's job to find the enemy to avoid ambush. Yet, with the warmth of the sun and the soothing crash of the waves on the sand, Cypher's mind wandered. Wandered to them.

Nora was the most beautiful woman he had ever met. Her dark hair fell past her shoulders and curled around her face. Her eyes were the color of rich earth that nurtured the growing things of Spring, and they sparkled with mirth like the evening stars. Her brown skin was warm and soft beneath his gloveless touch. She was kind, gentle, and honest. Nora was everything he was not.

Instead of being repelled by his flaws, she inspired him to be better. Because of her, Amir learned compassion and trust. She taught him how to love.

Through that love, they welcomed a daughter into the world. She was the spitting image of her mother, but she was definitely a daddy's girl. She clung to his legs and laughed at his terrible dad jokes. She waved new drawings in his face and he taught her coin tricks. When they crossed the street, she would reach for his hand. He swore to protect her till his last breath.

Because of them, Amir began to let go of his life as an information broker. He would show his face in public when he was with them and he tasted a normal civilian life. He devoted himself to being a husband and father and to provide so they would not know the poverty he grew up with.

It was his sloppy foolishness that got them killed. His enemies put the two and two together. There was nothing he could do to stop them. He failed to protect his family.

"Found them."

Sova's report snapped Cypher out of the past. Sova was a better scout than him. The hunter was never distracted. Ashamed, the Moroccan agent shifted on his sore stomach and elbows and checked his scope.
