thunder storms was one of the things rose absolutely hated. any time the sky looked too dark or she'd hear that heavy rumble she get somewhere cozy and cuddle up until it all blew over. she felt that her fear was a little irrational but she always rethought that when seeing massive storms blow out states like it was nothing.

nathan was very understanding of her fear. he wasn't afraid of thunderstorms, but he used to be when he was a kid. his parents always found it irrational so he was very understanding with rose. he'd get something to distract her mind, a puzzle or coloring book, sometimes a word puzzle to keep her occupied until it all blew over. and if all else fails, he'd put on a movie, turn it up loud and cuddle her closely.

nathan was surprisingly the first to notice how dark the sky was. usually rose was quick to run to his side and pull him to their room but, she was very immersed in her movie. he closed the curtains and sat down besides her, trying not to alarm her.

"what's wrong?" she asked while looking up at him.

"nothing, just thought it was too bright in here for a movie." he pulled her into his chest and kissed the top of her head. she smiled and laid back on his chest, tucking her cold hands under his warm body. he hoped it was just some rain passing through but he'd soon learn, that would not be the case, in the slightest. he held her body tighter as the thunder rumbled the house.

"baby." she whined while holding onto him tighter.

"i know honey, just focus on your movie." he reached for the remote and turned the volume up. this worked for awhile but as the storm picked up, she grew more scared and focused on the storm.

"should we go bake some cookies?" nathan said, trying to distract her. baking was something she always did to distract herself from anything, and cookies on this cold evening did sound pretty good. she stood and walked to the kitchen, avoiding looking out of the windows to avoid seeing how heavy it was raining.

"can you get the mixer?"she asked, knowing it was at the top of the pantry.

as they sat down to eat their cookies and find a new movie the house went dark. it took a minute for them to understand what happened but when they did her eyes glossed over.

"it's okay, we can get my laptop, i'll put it on the hot spot." he stood but her hand was still holding onto his arm tightly.

"you can come with me, we can lay down and watch a movie, maybe take a nap." she nodded and followed close behind him, her forehead pushed against his shoulder blade. she knew she would look outside and freak herself out more if she didn't.

"you're alright princess, i promise." he cooed while reaching his hand behind himself to softly rub her waist. she hummed softly but stayed pressed against him even after they got in the room. he closed all the curtains then gently pulled her into his lap after sitting on the bed, grabbing his laptop from the bedside table.

"should we watch despicable me?" he asked while pressing another kiss to her forehead. she nodded while dipping her cooking in the milk.

"yes please." he smiled and looked for the movie as she practically clung to him.

"it sounds like it's passing." nathan said while rubbing her back.

"are you sure?" she asked with a soft pout.

"yes love, i'm sure." rose cupped his cheeks and pressed a soft kiss to his lips.

"you are the best." she said, resting back against his shoulder. the thunder rumbling made her jump but overall she felt safe in his hold.

"god i'm so tired." she groaned after thunder pulled her from drifting off again. he kissed the top of her head while softly running his hands through her hair.

"you can go to sleep... i promise i'll keep a close eye on the storm." she shook her head.

"but the thunder is so loud." she whined, scooting closer up to his face.

"i know baby, but i'm here.. and i'm not gonna let anything happen to you." he let his thumbs rub her cheeks.

"can you turn the laptop up just a little bit?" he nodded and reached for the his laptop, letting it drown out more of the storm. he noticed as her grip on his shirt loosened as time went on, her body jumping less and less at each rumble of thunder.

he felt proud, in a way. usually she was too afraid to go to sleep, or even close her eyes for a few minutes. they'd gotten far enough that she's actually sleeping through the storm. she only woke up when everything flipped back on, the light buzz of electronics waking her up.

"good mornin." nathan cooed, rubbing her back.

"mornin." she smiled.

"the storm has passed, everything's all good." he said while running his fingers through her hair.

"you did so good...i'm proud of you sweet girl." rose sat up from his shoulder and rested in his lap.

"can we go check outside?" she asked, lacing their fingers together. he swung his legs over the side of the bed.

"yeah, we could go check outside." he opened the curtains as he made his way to the back yard, rose sighing softly.

"see, everything's okay." he said in a caring way, resting his arm over her shoulder. there was just a bunch of leaves and a few broken branches across the yard.

"everything's okay." she said to herself, laying her head against nathan's chest. they stood here together until she remembered they still had some cookies left over from earlier.
