Lady Uzushio was the Uzumaki's goddess. She watched over Her land and Her people while they lived, and in death She brought their spirits back home to Her.
When Uzushiogakure fell, Lady Uzushio protected Her land, and protected the bodies of the dead until what was left of Her people could complete the ritual.
But, there were very few Uzumaki left, and even fewer of the Main Branch. Two left alive, one corrupted by the Snake and the other the container of a shell of her comrade.
Karin escapes the grasps of Orochimaru with the Sound 5, and Taka (minus Sasuke) and ends up at the Uzushiogakure ruins the same time that Naruto shows up after having run away from Konoha with Sasuke, Gaara (Sakura and Kakashi if you like good team 7 dynamics, and other company if you so please).
Together the last of Lady Uzushio's Children rebuild a once great nation.
