Sabine
Before

Sabine sat at the kitchen table carefully nursing her coffee mug. It was early in the morning and she was preparing to start her day, soon she'd have to get up and help Tom open the bakery, but there she sat staring out the window. The sky is grey and gloomy, lately the temperature has been in forties and fifties. It's crazy how time flies. Seems like just yesterday they were welcoming spring and then, moments later, summer. My how the years have gone, it feels like not long ago Marinette was 5 years old preparing for her first day of school. Now she was 17 years old, a senior in high school, the rest of this year will fly by too and before they know it she'd be graduating and on her way to college.

She sighed and wrapped her hands around her steaming cup, it was nice and relaxing, warm. For a few moments she enjoyed the quiet until she realized something was off it was too silent. She should have heard the shuffling upstairs as her daughter got ready for school. Then she was supposed to come rushing down exclaiming how she was late again, then she would grab a croissant tell them goodbye and head out to school. But she didn't.

Marinette wasn't up yet. Sabine shook her head and chuckled to herself, that girl needs to get up before she's really late to school. Sabine stood up from her seat, leaving her warm mug, and headed up the stairs to Marinette's room.

"Marinette? Honey? You need to get up now or you're gonna be late for school." Mrs. Dupain-Cheng knocked as she slowly opened the trap door. She waited for and answer but it didn't come. "Marinette?" She asked again and finished up the steps into the room, leaving the trap door open. Calmly, she headed over to Marinette's bed to try and shake her awake. But what she found wasn't a sleeping mound under the covers. What she found was a made bed that hadn't been touched. It was empty and Marinette was no where to be found.

What? This can't be right. Did Marinette not come home last night? Her heart started to beat a little faster and her breathing became more frequent. Quickly, she shuffled back down the trap door, not bothering to close it, and returned to the table where her mug still sat. Sabine put a hand on her head and took a deep breath. She didn't want to panic yet, think, Marinette went over to Alya's yesterday to work on a school project. Sabine remembered Marinette texting her that she stayed later than planned, maybe she decided it was too late to come home and spent the night. Yes, that was it, everything was fine. But telling herself that didn't stop the gut feeling something was wrong.

Sabine grabbed her phone and dialed her daughters number. She held her breath trying not to worry as the phone continued to ring. Everything is fine, she told herself again. "Hey! You've reached Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Sorry I can't come to the phone right now but you know what to do, text me or just leave a message at the—" Beep!

"Come on Marinette, please answer." She pleaded and redialed. Each ring felt like an eternity and with each ring the knot in her stomach grew. "Hey! You've reached Marinette Dupain-Cheng." Sabine let out a noise of frustration."Sorry I can't come to the phone right now but you know what to do text me or just leave a message at the—" Beep!

"Marinette, honey, please call me back. Ok? I'm starting to worry." She paused, "I love you." Then she hung up. Ok so Marinette won't answer but maybe she has her phone on silent. She could be heading to school with Alya right this moment and Sabine could be worried for no reason. She immediately scrolled through her contacts

Alya Césaire

She held her breath again as the phone rang. Sabine you're worried for no reason, Alya's going to pick up, Marinette's going to be right beside her, and you'll see her after school.

Hello? The phone picked up

"Hello? Alya?"

Hey Mrs.Dupain-Cheng. Is everything ok?

"Yes everything's fine...I think. I just can't get a hold of Marinette. Is she with you? Did she by any chance stay the night last night?"

No.....She left my house at around 10:30 last night. Did she not come home?

Those words felt like a kick to the stomach 10:30. Her daughter left last night at 10:30 and didn't make it home. All the worst scenarios filled her head. This is every mothers worst nightmare and it's happening to her. Marinette, her precious child, was truly missing.

Mrs.Dupain-Cheng? Is everything alright?? Did Marinette not come home?!

She could hear concern fill the young girls voice. " I-I'm so sorry to worry you Alya," Sabine barely managed to get the words out, "but no she didn't. Please just go to school and don't worry about it. I'm sure everything will be fine." She said and hung up the phone. For a moment she stood there, that dreadful feeling overtaking her body. This isn't real, there's no way this is real. Any moment now she was going to wake up and it would all be over. But she didn't wake up, because this wasn't a nightmare, it was all too real. She needed to call the police right now, they say the first 48 hours are crucial right? It's already been about 9 hours since Marinette was last seen that leaves 39 hours and the clock was ticking.

"Tom!!" She yelled as she hurried down into the bakery, almost falling down the stairs. She picked up her phone again, barely able to hold it and dial 112 because of how much she was shaking. Tom looked at her worriedly "Sabine what is it? What's wrong?"

The phone picked up

112 What's your emergency?
