this is the very first fanfiction idea i ever came up with: the idea of it is that the main character has the soul of one of the hogwarts founders, so you can choose which house you want them to be from. if they are from gryffindor, their markings are red, if their from hufflepuff their markings are gold, etc etc you get the point.
i was going to write the characters as the same age as harry potter, and have the markings start to appear during their 4th or 5th when the danger is approaching. basically, voldemort finds out oc is an angel and wants to either kill her or recruit her.
