Snort. Michael sat up. The sky was still dark. He got up from the pig pen that he'd usually fall asleep in and walked towards a barn that had been turned into his room. He climber the ladder to his bed and took out a notebook from under his pillow. It was mostly sketches, but it had adventure plans in between. Since his 10th birthday, his older siblings had allowed him to go out exploring, so long as he took the right equipment, his older brother and came back before the sun set. He also had to plan it out and show them beforehand. He had only gone on two adventures so far because he spent most of his free time figuring out his main plan.
He was woken up by a bell being rung, which meant someone was trying to get into his room. He quickly hid the notebook and ran to open the door. His sibling, Snifferish, was waiting for him. At the sight of his pjs, they crossed their arms. "I told you to be ready when I came to get you!". Michael, still half asleep, asked why. "Are you serious? It's Niki's birthday! We're going to go see her! Get ready, quick." He said and stormed off. Michael can't believe he had forgotten about it. Niki was his older sister, who died four years back. He was told she died of natural causes, but the fact that none of them specified what it was made him suspicious about it. That's what had first made him start his research. His sisters things were kept in the attic, and in her album book he had found a picture of Sniff, Puffy, Niki and another person. He asked them if they had another sibling or perhaps a roommate before. They both denied it. His brother, Charlie, was sitting to the side. When Michael had asked this, he turned to Puffy who just shook her head. Charlie avoided Michael whenever he tried to ask him about it.
Some people in the town would show up on Nikis birthday and leave flowers at her grave. Her friends always told Michael and Charlie new stories about her. Everyone loved her, and from what he could remember Michael loved her too. After everyone but those who were close to her left, Puffy stood on a log and cleared her throat. "Hi guys, thank you all for keeping Niki's memory alive. I know she was loved, is still loved and will forever be loved. Um, as usual, would anyone like to say any words?" As puffy got down, people started speaking amongst themselves. Some started to walk towards the log, but Charlie stepped up before anyone else. Everyone went quiet. "Okay uh, hi guys haha. I know how awful it was that she had to go, but I think, it's like she helped me get back to my family? I know we all hate he who must not be named, but life just works in its awful ways like that. I think, in a way, her sacrifice brought me back to you all. It was like her final act of kindness. She was kind until the very end is what I'm trying to say, and even in death she helped her family, and I just hope I can at least help keep her memory alive, like her final gift or something." He looked down and stepped off the log. People agreed and clapped. "She was kind until the very end. To Niki" Puffy hugged Charlie and raised her glass. Others did the same.
He who must not be named. Michael thought. That must be the person in the picture. He pulled out the picture and went up to two girls that were talking under a tree. "Um, excuse me, is this the he Charlie was talking about?" One of the girls looked down at the picture and took a step back. "Awe look at Niki. Look at all of them. So young" Her face then turned from happiness to disgust. "Where did you get this? That was Ranboo, but I don't think you should focus on them. They was a terrible person" Michael stared at her. Ranboo. He finally had a name. His final missing piece. He would be able to connect all his research together. He thanked her for her time and headed home.
