November 27, 2022: a poem
When the soul leaves, where does it go?
Is it in the eyes, that are glassy and open
Does flow out of the last breath breathed?
Does it float above the body?
Drift around the room?
When you died and your body was still
I saw you lying there and I wondered
Where did you go?
I lied awake at night wondering
Where did you go?
Is heaven in the clouds?
Up in space?
Was heaven in the room that night,
Floating in the air, with the soul and molecules?
I believe in heaven, but faced with the sight of death
I wanted to yell, to cry, where did you go?
When the soul leaves, where does it go?
