-----------------------Sweat dripped from your brow as you stood in your fighting stance, fists in front of you that were wrapped in bandages to prevent further skin breaks from fighting for so long. You lunged forward, another punch was thrown at your punching bag, right hook then left over and over again. It was to keep up your stamina you knew that but it was also to test how far you could push yourself some days. A constant fight in your head that you had for the past 20 or so years ever since you joined your friend Chris in his fight to help humanity. It was a struggle mentally, always wanting to be better and to fight better so you could help your squad. Never forgetting that feeling of losing a friend right in front of you because you weren't strong enough to take him with you. A frustrated sigh escaped your lips as you pulled back from the punching bag in front of you. Your whole body ached from the adrenaline that ran through you. That feeling of your heart beat was the only thing you felt you could hear as you stared off into space. Not even realizing you heard the door open to the side of you. You took a deep breath as you wiped the sweat away from your forehead with your arm. Finally noticing the smaller figure that had entered into the room, a small smile appeared on your face.
"Hey Kiddo! What are you up to I didn't even realize you came in here, must have been too caught up in my workout" you exclaimed, turning to face her. The little girl you watched grow up over the years from your dear friend that meant so much to you. The little girl you promised to look after and to take care of in the future just like you told him so many years ago when she was just a baby. She smiled slightly at you yet her face fell some what. The hat she always wore covered her eyes as she walked closer to you and took a seat on the ground. You were confused as you watched her, quickly grabbing your towel to the side of you before joining her on the floor. The now sweat covered towel laid against your neck as you sat back with a groan, cursing how old you were getting. Your palms rested back on the floor, keeping you propped up as you gazed at the ceiling. Finding their way back to her as she sat on the floor in front of you.
"Rose? What's wrong are you doing alright?" You asked suddenly, knowing that look on her face. Her hand clutched the edge of her jacket as she kept her head down. You watched as a tear fell to the floor as she sat there silently, she was crying and all you could do was watch. Wondering what made her cry like this, who made her cry like this when you knew she never liked to cry in front of anyone. You sat up suddenly, your back straightened up as you moved closer. Your hand rested on her shoulder, watching her lift her head up to match your gaze. You frowned as you pulled her in, hugging her tightly as she cried into your chest. That's when it hit you, today was the day wasn't it. It was her fathers birthday and that day you wanted to forget as well since it would cause you less pain knowing it was another year he was gone.
"Oh honey I'm so sorry" you muttered as you rubbed her back to calm her down, realizing she must have been thinking about him today more then ever.
"Y-Y/n"
"Yes Rose?"
"C-Can you tell me what dad was like again?" She whimpered into your chest, hearing your heartbeat pick up somewhat. You smiled warmly as you sat there. Thinking about everything you have told her over the years. You had been a great friend of Ethan's after meeting him after the attack on him and his wife. You grew close, your bond was unbreakable from how close you both were. You loved him so much the more time you spent around him, even meeting Rose when she was just a baby in his home. Hearing him tell Rose that you were her aunt even though you knew she most likely wouldn't understand. But what stuck with you in your mind always was the state he was in the last time you had seen him. Standing there with Chris, Rose was in your arms as tears fell down your face. Watching him stop on the bridge, the trigger to the explosives in his good hand. You had known about the mold and about how it affected him. But watching him disintegrate was just too much for you as you clutched on to your niece. He told you to always protect Rose no matter what, that he trusted you to take care of her in the future and that he loved you both so much.
A small tear slipped down your cheek as you remembered him, smiling to yourself as you had an imagine of him in your head currently. Her father was a hero and you made that clear to her anytime she asked you who he was like. Telling her how he had saved her from monsters beyond what she could understand. That he went through great lengths to save her and made a sacrifice to let her live.
"Your father was a great man Rose....he was probably the only person that truly knew me for me. We didn't have a friendship that was over 10 years long no. But in the time we had together we were tied at the hip. I taught him a lot of the self defense tactics he knew actually, it was how me and your father became close friends after I saved him from the house in Louisiana I told you about remember?"
"Y-Yeah"
"He came to me and told me he wanted to be stronger, he wanted to protect his family and the additions that would be made to it in the future. Before you were even born he wanted to protect you with every fiber in his being and once you were brought into the world you were what always mattered to him. I remember him calling me after your birth, crying of happiness that you had come into the world healthy. That I had to come over right away in order to see you even though your mother was still exhausted from bringing you into the world."
"He really had you come and visit me when I was just born"
"Yeah..I was in the middle of working too, but he insisted that it was so important to come immediately once they got home. So me being me I listened and came over, I got to hold you in my arms as you smiled so sweetly. Hearing him talk to you so softly that auntie y/n was here. He made sure I knew he considered my family and that I was always welcome to come and see you no matter what was going on. Even pushing the role of being the babysitter on me and I just couldn't say no. He just wanted to show you off because of how cute you were, you were definitely a daddy's girl just saying"
"I probably would still be wouldn't I"
"I think you would, you remind me a lot of your dad. Your strength, your determination, your sarcastic comebacks, but most importantly the fact that you are willing to do whatever it takes to become stronger to protect what you love. Rose, your dad would be so proud of you and how far you have come. He told me over drinks how scared he was to bring you into the world with how it was. Scared that he wouldn't be able to protect you, he wanted you to be strong and to be able to handle anything that came your way. Even admitting he would have liked for you to take some classes in self defense with me even before you could walk....I made a promise to him, in his last moments he lived. He handed you over to me after saving you from the monster that took you. You were crying and scared as he handed you over with his jacket you always wear over you. He told me to always protect you and to take care of you in the future. So I did, and I got the opportunity to watch a wonderful girl grow up that her father would be so proud of" you replied, feeling her hug you tighter as you both sat there. Another tear slipped down your cheek as you thought of him. How angry you were that you couldn't save him, that you couldn't convince him to came with you back to the helicopter to escape. You wished he could have watched his beautiful girl grow up to be a young adult but instead it was almost like you did for him.
"Everyday I train harder Rose.... Because I never want to feel as weak as I did that day. Your father brought the best out of me in any situation, but watching him that day broke me beyond imaginable. It hurt so much to watch such a wonderful man sacrifice so much, I wish I could have slapped him in the face to make him realize what he was doing. To pull him to come back with me and Chris, just anything to make him come back. But his mind was already made up and there was nothing stopping that I'm afraid."
"Don't blame yourself Y/n alright, I don't want you to think it was your fault he didn't come with. He saved me and if you would have stayed he knew you would have died too. My father is a hero and I don't hate him for anything he did, now I have you to remind me of him. You kept your promise to be here with me and I can't thank you enough" Rose replied, her face was lifted from your chest as you stared at her in shock. It felt like that struggle was slightly lifted from your mind, that struggle that kept you working so hard to better yourself. You smiled at her, reaching into your pocket suddenly and pulled out a small pendant you carried with you.
"It was your fathers...he gave it to me after I rescued him...you should have it now you know. I just feel like you should" you replied as you reached forward, placing it in her grasp. She smiled as she stared at it,
"Y/n"
"Yes Rose?"
"Thank you for being here with me"
"Anything for you sweetheart, anything for you"
