Chapter XXI - The Last Supper

"Supper's ready!" CJ yelled, banging his fist against a pan, in an fruitless attempt to create noise. Hardly anybody heard him; everybody was too busy playing games and messing around. One of the two twins was bringing out bread and soup, his arms loaded with food. CJ dropped the pan and it clattered onto the ground. A few faces turned to face him. He smiled. "Supper's ready," announced CJ. He added jokingly, "It was made an hour ago. Just kidding!"

It was obvious food was arriving, as the beautiful smell of freshly-baked bread lingered. It was alien to them. Time here was a more complicated concept. Nobody quite knew how long the facility had kept them from the outside. They were sealed in. But this food and such a gathering was enchanting. Legendary. It brought everybody together, like some sort of childhood sleepover, except there were no parents and everybody couldn't go back home. That was the dream, for when you were busy playing, enjoying yourselves, having fun. Now they were just stuck here. Forever. They would never see their families. Share their stories. Recount their hapless memories.
