The Night

After my strange encounter with the phantom, he had begun to visit me a few weeks later. I assumed the masked man to be the phantom because Joseph spoke of him wearing a mask. That and other ghastly rumors. It was fun talking to the phantom, but the only problem was that during our conversations, he kept to the shadows. As if he could sense potential in me, he began to teach me how to sing.

He had become my angel of music.

We started out with simple songs, mainly using the words do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti and do. In that specific order. Sometimes, he would have me guess which pitch he was humming. In doing so, he perfected my hearing. I now had perfect pitch. As my secret training progressed, the phantom taught me harder songs. In time, my voice became as strong as Christine.

One night, Carlotta had a party that raged on and on throughout the evening. It was impossible to rest with loud chattering and music coming from the celebration. Carlotta did this every time she got the lead role. As I was readying for bed, the masked man decided to pay me a visit. I walked out of the bathroom when he walked out of my mirror. I stood there in shock as he closed the two way mirror behind him. I inhaled, ready to scream when the phantom's gloved hand covered my mouth. His arm snaked around my waist, keeping me in place.

"Sh," he whispered into my ear. The man uncovered my mouth a little.

"WHO ARE AND WHAT DO YOU WANT!?" I yelled. He covered my mouth again, fixing his mistake.

"Shh, I am Christine's Angel and the one who saved your life. I want to know who you really are," he said. His voice was deep. I had grown accustomed to it. He almost had an accent. Scottish or Scandinavian. His gloved hand was removed from my mouth.

"I'm Y/n L/n. I work here as a designer for pretty much everything," I answered. A question popped into my head. "You are the one who has been teaching me, correct?"

"Yes," he answered.

"If you are my teacher, why do you know very little of me?" He sighed.

"I only know of your name, nothing else," he said. "I thought I could strengthen our bond as student and teacher if I knew a little more."

"Okay," I replied. "In order to do that, I must know your name."

"I said it before."

"Yes, you did, but every angel has a name, like Gabriel," I said. The phantom turned me around. I was face to face with his masked face. I could see his eyes, one hidden behind the shadow from his mask.

"My name is Erik. Erik Destler," he said.

"Nice to meet you Erik. Erik Destler." I smiled.

The following week, Erik came to me with a new song he had written. Now that I knew who he was, he no longer taught from the shadows.

"What's this, Erik?" I asked. He held paper in his hands. Smiling, he handed me the parchments. I looked at them. Erik had written a song titled "The Music of the Night." I read the notes that were neatly written on the paper. The key was in minor, so instead of sounding like a good, joyful song, it sound sad and depressing.

"So what do you think?" he asked. I continued to read the music.

"Erik," I said, "this sounds like a funeral." He frowned.

"Are there any changes I could make?" I examined the papers once again.

"Yes," I answered. I walked over to my desk and pulled out a pen. I scribbled off some notes and pitches that didn't fit in the music. Erik looked over my shoulder. "There! Finished!" I declared. I had perfected the song. Erik grabbed the papers from my hand and began to hum the melody.

"Y/N this is perfect!" he happily exclaimed. "Christine is going to love this!"

"Are there any lyrics to it?" I asked.

"Of course," Erik said. "I have yet to write them down but I have memorized the words."

"Could I hear it, please?" I asked. Erik smiled.

"Of course." I anxiously sat down on my bed. Erik cleared his throat.

"Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defenses." Erik grabbed my hand, lifting me up. I was lost in his world. His voice was so hypnotizing.

"Slowly, gently night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day."

He softly grabbed my chin, turning my face his way. I looked up into his eyes."Turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night." I closed my eyes, losing myself in the music.
"Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar!
And you'll live as you've never lived before."He held the note, raising his hands up."Softly, deftly, music shall caress you."He once again grabbed a hold of my hand."Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you."Erik got close to me, only to walk away.
"Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness that you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night.
Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to be!"

His voice seemed to echo throughout my room.

"Only then can you belong to me."

He turned me around, resting one hand on my waist. He held on to my hand and raised it to his cheek. I could feel the warmth of his flesh.

"Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night."

Erik got close once again. I felt weak in his presence. My legs gave out, but Erik was quick to catch me. Carrying me like a bride, he placed me on my bed.

"You alone can make my song take flight

Help me make the music of the night."

I was left breathless.

The following morning I woke up, happy. The night from before was still fresh in my mind. I finished getting ready and made my way to the stage.
