Leo put the last finishing touch to the ofrenda for his mother, placing the photograph of them inbetween the bright yellow marigold flowers.
The altar was decorated with Esperanza's favorite foods and drinks, candles, pan de muerto, sugar skulls, fruit, and salt.
The room was dark, and the candles glowed with intensity. Above the ofrenda, strings of papel picado hung delicatly, the colors making a scene even Iris would be proud of.
Leo picked up on of the sugar skulls. Sugar skulls represent the presence of death, along with an acceptance that death is part of life.

Death is part of life. He'd heard that countless times from people after his mom passed, and every time he would ignore them and tell them that they didn't understand. But maybe they were right. Maybe it was okay that his mamá was gone, because dying is part of living.
