"This year during summer my family went and visited my Grandparents in Canada. Canada is much cooler than how it's shown on TV. But they do live up to all the rumors about Canadian Bacon and syrup..."

"Well, it's not much, but it's a start." Ryan told himself as he closed his laptop and went back to playing video games. He knew that if he kept at it and worked really hard he could finally get that high score on his game and all his friends would be jealous. Besides, the paper wasn't due for another week when school started back up. He wasn't ready for summer to end, and it really was not fair that the school required them to write a paper before school even started. For today and the rest of the week, he was set on enjoying what little time of summer he had left. After all, he had just turned 16, next year he would have to start looking for a summer job and then he wouldn't have any time to play video games and hang out with his friends. As he laid back in his chair he let himself get sucked into his game, he couldn't help but think about what a boring school year he was about to enter. Luckily he knew he would have his friends to help him get through it.

"How is the paper coming along? You know school starts in a week and that paper is very important," his mother hounded him at the dinner table. For the last two weeks that's all his mom could ever seem to talk about. She had always been excited about Ryan's schooling, being a former teacher, she couldn't help herself. Though she left that life behind to help her mother whose health was declining. Often she and Ryan's dad had to leave for weeks at a time to care for her. In fact, they were planning on leaving again in the next couple of days, but she wanted to make sure she was there for Ryan's first day. "It's all done, Mom. I just need to go through and make a few edits." Ryan lied as he shoved his mouth full with a giant meatball with very few spaghetti noodles. He was hoping that by saying that he would be able to put his mom at ease and even give himself a break from the constant nagging.

"Oh good," she said while shooting a quick wink at her husband across the table, "You should let your father proofread it then, since it's all done, we would hate for you to turn it in with any spelling errors," his mom challenged him. Ryan couldn't help but start to grin, he knew his mom knew, his mom always knew when something was amiss. That's what he loved about his mom, she knew him too well and he could never sneak anything past her, but it was still fun to try. He was going to miss her when they left for Canada in a few days. "Okay okay, I have the first few paragraphs done, but I will do it I promise. Just lay off me would ya?" Ryan's mom laughed and let him off the hook, "If..." she started, "you go and help your father welcome the new neighbors that moved in down the street. Then I will stop bugging you about your paper. I did bake some cookies you can drop off to them.

Ryan rolled his eyes and let out a groan, he really didn't want to go but reluctantly agreed. His mom was very friendly, every time a new neighbor moved in she was already baking cookies. So when Ryan saw the moving truck pull in a few days ago, he kept his fingers crossed it would go unnoticed by his mother, but sadly that wasn't the case.

After dinner Ryan and his dad walked down the street together with a plate of his mom's famous chocolate chip cookies. They made their way down to the house with the moving truck and noticed it was completely empty. "Wow!" His dad exclaimed, "remind me to ask them to help us unload when we move next." His dad then proceeded to laugh at his own terrible joke, Ryan rolled his eyes but couldn't help but let out a little giggle. He didn't want to admit it, but his dad was funny. They made their way up the driveway and up to the door. It was a nice house that had a couple steps leading up to the door and a nice porch that you could put some chairs out on if you wanted to. Ryan made all these observations while his dad knocked on the door. They waited a few seconds and didn't hear a thing. "Looks like they aren't home, SHAME!" Ryan yelled as he hopped down all the stairs in one leap. As his dad turned to walk down the stairs, they heard a strange sound that couldn't have been human. The door swung open and a woman was standing there, her hair in a messy bun with a few strands of hair hanging in her face, sweat beaded up on the top of her forehead. She wore a light pink button up shirt and some jeans, she looked tired.
