Kratos slammed a ritual dagger into the golden lotus flower. The metal vines unwound themselves from the engraved stone, while the natural ones snapped.
Atreus called out the hymn from the fifth puzzle. Not surprisingly, he picked up the language as soon as Mimir translated a few words. It was in the boy's soul, Mimir excused.
Heavy smoke filled the room. Lobaan. Kratos knew the smell well. Cleansing and therapeutic.
He pulled Atreus out of the final attempt the room had. A long curved blade. Attached to a very long handle. And a woman.
"We are not the enemy!" Kratos shouted.
Another thwack. This time at Kratos. She avoided Atreus' arrows, but did not return fire. Her attacks became more furious to the father. Metal parted the air. Her blade's whistle the only thing Kratos could use to know were her next hit would come.
He rolled out of the way, towards Atreus. He threw the boy to a higher stage. Maybe this way the boy could land a hit.
Her shadow grabbed on to Kratos. Her physical form pulled the blade back. The gleam in her eye made Kratos fear for a second. Just one. That she may kill Atreus after this, or raise him as her own. He was not sure which would be worse.
Kratos commanded the boy to stop. Her shadow let go. He was thrown across the room. She waited for him to stand, to get his breath. Then they ran at each other. There was no sense to their fighting, but it did not feel like nonsense. It felt... familiar. Like sparring with a friend.
The blows were easier to parry. She, like Kratos, fought with restraint. Mimir yelled for Atreus to say something, anything! So, the boy screamed something in Hindi.
She found that very funny. She lowered her blade, and offered Kratos her hand to shake.
"I misread the situation." She said. "I apologize. Y/N's the name. Slicing's my game."
Atreus hopped down from the stage. He ran over and sassed,
"We can see that. So you know other languages."
"And you know lots of jokes. Or I misheard you pronounce, and it made sense as a joke to me. Either way." You patted the boy's head. "Good shots. Had me worried.
By chance do you know where I can find a guy named Thor? He owes me. Broken oaths, you know the gig. You look like a friend of mine, now that I think about it."She stared Kratos in the eye, and he remembered. Only one creature had that... look. Age and time are long forgotten to her. Kratos wasn't surprised by her shit memory. Just confused that he managed to encounter her again. Especially when she boasted about realm hopping in her spare time. And to her, that has no concept of it, had lots to spare.
"You use to go by Richard," Kratos recalled. "We met in Goa. You use to make Atreus keep watch when you slept."
"I don't know her. And haven't been to Google."
"Goa. And he was the man you are named after, respect his memory."
Atreus muttered under his breath. Then decided to ask if he could hold her weapon. Kratos didn't like how quickly she obliged, but he knew now that she would raise the boy after slaughtering Kratos in his sleep. He knew, because he could see her fondness growing with each breath the boy took.
"Ah, yes. Cause you kept calling me a Dick. Changed my name again. Things tend to get boring, you know. It's easier to hide from people."
"Why were you in the box?" Atreus asked.
"Heard of Pandora?"
"No."
"Good. Cause it's not that. I was hiding from someone. A name change wasnt enough this time."
"Did Odin put you in there?"
"Yeah. I'm lucky he likes me. Powerful friends in powerful places."
She didn't like when Atreus' grip tightened on the weapon. She quickly explained that she was joking. A pensive air to her, the excitement of finding a small dangerous thing wore off with this admission.
"I wanted Thor's attention." She continued. "I went too far. His daddy popped out of nowhere during my last attempt. He wagged his finger and called me a foolish child. I dont remember after that. Just you guys. Here. Where are we?"
Atreus stared with a look that Kratos could have sworn was like hers. To the point he thought his son had been birthed my his wife, and her. Until Atreus scoffed.
"Why would you want Thor?"
"I needed powerful allies. I make enemies with the generation's worst. The elders help. I thought Thor would help. I promised that if he didn't, I'd haunt him. I'm not doing a very good job, am I?"
"You just got out of prison, lass. How were you suppose to?"
"I find a way for everything, um."
"Mimir, lass."
"Mimir. There's a reason that thing boxed me up like chocolates."
"What's a chocolate?"
"I'll show you, my son."
Atreus smiled. Confused, but the point was that he smiled. And that smile solidified her affection to the boy, and Kratos' over protection, because why does she want his son? Why the immediate adoption?
She lifted Atreus above her head, to the light. God lighting to her. A shift passed over him, but not his eyes. She put him down, undid his wrist wrap to show a new Crest.
"I'm good at handling other people's problems better than my own. If you need me, I'm a summons away. Kratos, my favourite crustacean. We'll catch up soon. You need to jog my memory more. I remember your friend more than you. You are a glimpse of a person."
"We stayed to training. It was the only time you weren't insufferable. Whatever the form you chose was."
"... fuck you too, man..."
Kratos rolled his eyes. She was still the same, despite this sudden urge to play mother. She would never think she was being insufferable. Not when everything to her was a joke.
"I use to bite you in your sleep." She said. "I remember now. You kept accusing me, so to spite you, I gaslit you. Made you think there was a monster on the prowl. That's why I asked your buddy to keep an eye."
"I knew it was you."
"No, you didn't!"
"I did. Atreus was an honest man. And you made the mistake of letting him in on your joke."
"A mistake I cant make again, unfortunately. He was a good man. I couldn't resist telling him, he made me want to be honest."
She held his memory well enough to Kratos, enough to hold silence for his fallen friend. Their fallen friend, he acknowledged. After a while, she rocked on her heels. Then said,
"You didn't answer me, though. Where are we?"
