Adeline's POV

I was standing next to my mother as she was talking to the doctor. Her swollen belly covered by a pink shirt.

"A baby? I'm not having a baby. What on earth gives you that idea?" She questioned the doctor.

'I don't know mom, maybe the fact that one he's a doctor and two over the course of nine months your stomach is huge.' I thought to myself rolling my eyes. My mom scoffed to herself saying,

"I'm not listening to this. This is quackery." 'What the fuck is Quackery?'  I looked at my mother with a raised eyebrow then looked at the doctor who looked at my mother.

"But you're about to give birth." He told her, confused. I also looked confused, she didn't know her belly was growing, and her cravings were different. She rolled her eyes.

"Are you out of your mi..." She cut herself off with a pained gasp. I looked at mom with wide eyes, even at 11 years old I knew my baby sibling was coming. And I was excited.

"Mrs. Wormwood, you're having a contraction" The doctor said trying to be helpful. But my mother didn't believe it.

" Contractions are for pregnant women.... Who are having Baaaaaaaaabiiiiiiieeeees!" She yelled. "I'm having another stinkin baby!!!"

'Wow ok love you too mom' I thought bitterly as I helped the nurses take my mother into a birthing room(?).

I held my little sister Matilda as the doctor left to tell my father. I could hear My mother, father, and other patients singing.

I walked slowly behind my mother and looked at Matilda who looked fussy.

"Shh, It's okay." I shushed her bouncing her gently. I could tell it help slightly then I thought of a song my Self-proclaimed Aunt Honey sang to me.

"Adeline come on!" I heard my father yell in the parking lot. I ran to get into the car with Matilda in my arms.

I lay diagonal from Matilda on top of Mrs. Phelps portable library. I could feel her hand in mine as I read Les Miserable by Victor Hugo. I could hear Matilda as she sings,

♪ My mummy says I'm a lousy little worm. My daddy says I'm a bore. My mummy says I'm a jumped- up little germ, that kids like me should be against the law. I sigh, sitting up. I pick her up and I put her on my lap hugging her to my chest, feeling warm tears on my button-down. I pull back and smile, wiping her tears.

"Now don't you think on what mom and dad say. The only people whose opinions matter are me and you." I say trying to reassure her. She nods sniffing and asks me,

"What are you reading?" I smile at her and explain that I'm reading about the French revolution. She looks giddy at the idea of learning of the French revolution.

"Can I read it with you?" She asks me. I cringe knowing she wasn't ready to read about a woman having to revert to prostitution to pay for her child's medication.

"Um, maybe when you're a little older. For now, let's stick with fantasy novels for you" I say as I see Mrs. Phelps climb up the latter. 'Looks like it's time to close up' I thought.
