The lights overhead grew dim, and Gregory looked around for the quickest way out he could think of. Finally, he decided to go on the platform and through the atrium. Without a second to waste, he grabbed his duffel and Evan's hand, running straight for the garage door.
Gregory slammed the button on the platform, and he cringed at how slowly it moved up. When he reached the top, he and Evan dashed across the rows and rows of party tables practically in slow motion. Finally, the two reached the escalators and made their way to the elevators on the back of the second floor.
As soon as he stepped in, he jumped as he slammed the button, hearing a voice come from his FazWatch. Only it wasn't Freddy.
"Hey, little man," Vanessa said. "Or little men? I assume you're working together. Do you know what time it is? The doors are open; why are you still here? You plan on moving in, or do you just want a job? Maybe join the internship program? You two would make great security guards.
"Gregory, Evan, I think you two deserve a reward. Go check the main stage."
Gregory exchanged glances with Evan, who shook his head adamantly.
"We need to leave. We've been this lucky so far," he said, his face set.
Gregory looked back to the Atrium side of the elevator, nodding. "You're right. She's trying to get us to stay so Moondrop can catch us."
The elevator doors opened for the final time, and the two boys locked hands, racing down the stairs while Moondrop's creaky laugh echoed behind them. Gregory saw the open doors in the distance even in the dark, and he smiled, a newfound vigour forcing him to the exit. Once he was halfway there, an idea struck him, and he called Freddy, not wanting the bear to have to stay in this—there was no other way to say it—hellhole.
"Yes! It's open, let's go!" Gregory said once they reached the doors. He looked back and saw Freddy coming to them from what he assumed were the maintenance tunnels.
"Freddy, c'mon!" Gregory said, ready to get out.
"No," Freddy said softly. "I cannot exit this facility."
"Of course you can! Come on; we can hide you somewhere!" He gestured between him and Evan.
"Without a recharge station, my systems would shut down within an hour," Freddy persisted, his voice morose. "It is a safety precaution. It is...my design. This is where I must stay. Do not return; it will never be safe. I will miss you."
Gregory bit back the lump in his throat. He didn't know why he felt so attached to a bear robot he met a little over six hours ago, but granted, he knew Evan for even less of that time, and he felt just as close.
Gregory reflected back to the night. The daycare, the Lobby, Fazer Blast, Roxy Raceway, the West Arcade, even the sewer. He didn't want to admit it, but he had grown a family here. He wondered how many others got that opportunity.
How many others...
The newspapers.
Gregory didn't know how he'd forgotten them for this long. All those other kids that couldn't escape Vanny's demise. Or any of the other animatronics. He'd barely done it himself.
"Freddy, if we leave now...nothing will change, will it?" he whispered. "There will be more disappearances."
Freddy was silent for a moment. "Yes. I am afraid that is correct." Another pause. "Gregory, Evan, you have a choice to make. The door is open, and...you can go. Or, you can continue to investigate the secrets of the PizzaPlex. I feel there is something else going on besides Vanny."
