When Chloe regained consciousness, the world felt like a violent blur of pain and confusion. Her head throbbed, and her neck was a searing agony. As she tried to sit up, disorientation washed over her. It was dark, and the unfamiliar surroundings were all too real: she was still in the woods, not far from Tyler's house.
Panic clawed at her chest as fragmented memories flashed through her mind. Elena's blood, the bite, and then the horrific realization hit her like a tidal wave.
"Oh my god," Chloe mumbled, her voice trembling. Her phone buzzed violently in her back pocket, jarring her further. She fumbled to pull it out and saw Elena's name on the screen. With a shaky hand, she declined the call and dialed Damon's number, tears welling in her eyes.
"Where the hell have you been? Everyone's looking for you," Damon's voice crackled through the line, laced with concern and frustration.
"Damon," Chloe whispered, her voice barely above a broken murmur.
"Chloe? Where are you?" His tone shifted to urgent fear, the hairs on his neck prickling.
"I'm in the woods. Not far from Tyler's house-"
"Did he do something to you?" Damon's voice was sharp, filled with immediate worry.
"No. No, um, it was Elena. I think I didn't... Elena... I didn't know. I didn't, I can't..." Chloe's voice broke, and she choked on a sob as the reality of her situation sank in.
"What? What happened? What did she do?" Damon demanded, his voice echoing his rising panic.
"She killed me, Damon," Chloe gasped, the words barely escaping her trembling lips. She could barely grasp the enormity of what she was saying, but the raw terror in her voice was undeniable.
"What? She-" Damon's voice faltered, and Chloe could sense the shock on his end. "What do you mean she killed you?"
"I'm... really, really thirsty," Chloe cried, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. The unbearable thirst was a new, excruciating sensation.
"Do not move. Okay, stay exactly where you are. I'm coming to get you," Damon instructed, his voice firm but laden with urgency.
Chloe nodded, even though he couldn't see her, and ended the call. She sank down against a tree, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The fear was overwhelming, the darkness of the woods closing in on her like a suffocating blanket.
Being so close to Tyler's house only intensified her distress. The thought of him and the ache in her heart felt like an unbearable weight. The hunger, the throbbing pain, and the chaos of her emotions were all blending into a tempest of fear.
Memories of Damon and Stefan's warnings about heightened senses crashed over her. She could feel every pang of her broken heart, magnified to an excruciating degree. Everything was closing in on her, a storm of emotions and sensations that felt like she was drowning. The fear was suffocating, and Chloe felt utterly lost, overwhelmed by the chaos of her new existence.
