April 6th, 1917

A warm spring breeze rustled the blooming trees above, and the long grass in the nearby field swayed and swished. The warm sun beamed down on the resting soldiers beneath the trees. A distant chatter of men from the camp twenty yards away. Soft giggles from Tom and I broke the peaceful atmosphere as he once again told me the story of his friend Wilko.

"—the rat bites his fucking ear and runs off with it!" Tom exclaimed, nudging my shoulder. I can't help but cover my mouth as I giggle. He's grinning ear to ear as he watches me catch my breath.

"I know Tom! I was the one who patched him up afterward. I felt sorry for the poor guy." I rolled my eyes as he smirked.

"He made a hella fuss though, didn't he?"

"Wouldn't you if your ear was bit off!"

Tom threw his head back and laughed, causing a stir from the man beside me. "Oi, Blake, hush it. Some of us are trying to rest."

"Oh right, sorry Scho." Tom quickly apologizes, before looking at me again with mischievous eyes. "Say, Scho." Tom began, and Will lifts his helmet up to meet Tom's eyes.

"What, Blake?" Will looks at Tom with hooded eyes.

"Why are you in such a bloody bad attitude now? Weren't you being lively earlier?" As soon as Tom finished his question Will puts his helmet back over his eyes, crossing his arms over his stomach.

"Drank a bottle of wine, now I'd like to nap."

"Oh." Tom leans back on the tree trunk, looking up at the passing clouds, his jaw flexing into a yawn. I couldn't help but stare at him with adoration, his blue eyes watching the clouds gently float past. He'd taken his helmet off and the wind was blowing some stands of his dark brown hair, it seemed to be slightly knotted. My gaze landing on his plump lips, wondering how soft they really were. Since I laid eyes on him when he joined the regiment I was completely enamored with him.

The first time I really got to know Tom had to been the best half an hour of my life. He had come into the medical tent to get his arm patched up after he'd gotten stuck in a wire. The whole time I was patching up Tom's arm he graciously told me stories that I couldn't help but cackle at.

"Mate, are you alright?" Tom's voice brings me out of the trance, his face scrunched up with worry and confusion.

I had realized I'd been staring at him, I shook my head and turned my attention to the field before us. Another yawn broke the silence, "I'm gonna close my eyes for a little." Tom's speech became slightly slurred from drowsiness. I patted his arm gently as the drowsiness overcame him.
