The car was quiet aside from Charlie's crying. Candace would occasionally take her gaze off the road to look at him with sympathy. She figured his mind must've been exhausting to live in, considering he was crying so often.
Eventually, his crying died down and she decided it was safe to talk then.
"I'm proud of you for standing up to that guy, Charlie" she said weakly. He just looked at her, silently waiting for her to continue. "Some guys need a good beating" she added. He said nothing. "Giving me the silent treatment now?" she joked, but her laugh died when she saw him look down guiltily. "I'm just messing with you, Charlie" she told him, patting him on the shoulder. "You don't have to say anything"
Charlie just nodded and the two were silent the rest of the way home.
