(Narrator's POV)
"Well if it isn't Mr Too Mature and Grown Up to Remember he has a girlfriend." Connie said with a giggle as she and Steven talked on video chat. While being out in the world and finding what he wanted out of life was important, Connie and the Gems were very strict about Steven keeping in contact with them while he was on the road.
"Sorry. Been busy lately." Steven replied on video as he was filling up his Dondai with gas at a station.
"I know. I hadn't heard from you since we met up at that bed and breakfast. And of course everyone thinks we got intimate." Connie explained as Steven raised an eyebrow.
"But we did, didn't we?" He asked as Connie blushed.
"Yeah, but not everyone needs to know that! Yeesh! That's why it's called "Intimacy"! It's meant to be between us!" The girl exclaimed as Steven laughed at his girlfriend's flustered disposition.
"So how are the Gems doing? Have you been by the Temple?" He asked.
"They miss you so much. They all send their love. Peridot and Lapis can't wait until you come visit. They wanted me to tell you about Bismuth's plans to build you a summer home." Connie replied as Steven chuckled.
"Tell them I can't wait to see it when I head back that way. Hold on, Connie. My therapist is on the other line. I'll call you back. Love you." Steven said.
"Love you too, Steven." Connie replied as she hung up and sighed as Pearl and Amethyst came in, the latter with a huge grin on her face as Connie shook her head.
"You never change, Amethyst. When are you going to NOT have any sly remarks about mine and Steven's relationship?" She asked as Amethyst laughed in reply.
"Even when you guys are married, I'll be making jokes as you walk down the aisle. How's our boy doing?" She asked as Connie smiled.
"He seems happy on the road. He sends his love. It just feels strange without him here. And speaking of strange, have you guys figured out what is up with Garnet?" She asked as Pearl sighed.
"She won't tell us. Even when she's not holed up in her room, she's more stoic than she's been in years." The Pale Gem replied.
"Huh? But Pearl. Garnet is always like that. Or at least she's been like that for as long as I've been around you all." Connie said.
"That's just it, Connie. You don't know Garnet like me or Bismuth do. We fought side by side along with Steven's mother. All of us never had anything to hide...well let me retract that statement. My point is: If anyone other than Steven would be able to get Garnet to open up, then it's me or Bismuth." Pearl explained as Amethyst sighed.
"Much as I hate to admit it, you're right. I came along after the war had ended, so I don't know Garnet like you and Bismuth do. Anyway, I gotta head to Vidalia's. Greg's got some news he wants me and her to hear. Later." The Purple Gem said as she waved and left Pearl and Connie.
"So does Steven know about what's going on with Garnet?" Connie asked as Pearl shook her head.
"No he doesn't. I know I don't have a way with words like he does. Nor do I know how to get through to Garnet like him. Truth is, Steven and I never were close like him and Garnet. That's one of the things that saddened me the most about him leaving. I waited too long to realize how much he meant to me." Pearl said tearfully.
But before Connie could reply…
"WE NEED TO TELL THEM THE TRUTH, SAPPHIRE!!" Ruby could be heard yelling.
"AND WHAT DO WE TELL THEM, RUBY?!? HOW DO WE TELL THEM?!?" Sapphire yelled but stopped as she sensed they weren't alone. Turning around, she saw Pearl and Connie both with bewildered looks on their faces.
"Hey you two. So how did your video chat with Steven go, Connie?" Sapphire asked as Ruby tried to play along.
"Yeah. How's our Cutie Pie doing? Does he know we miss him?" She asked as Connie tried to hide a giggle but stayed on topic.
"He's fine and sends his love. But what were you two yelling about?" She asked as Pearl crossed her arms.
"Yes. Something you wanted to tell us about?" The Pale Gem asked as Ruby and Sapphire looked at each other, searching for some excuse.
"Yes. We do. We wanted to tell you all….that we plan on going to visit Steven when he lets us know where he plans on living." Sapphire said.
"Then what was all that about how you were going to tell us?" Pearl asked.
"That was more for YOU, Pearl." Ruby replied as Pearl looked offended.
"What?!? I wouldn't dare---" She began to say until her phone went off.
"Oh no. I have to get to Little Homeworld before those rambunctious Gems get ahold of my swords." Pearl said as she rushed out the house.
"I..uh...have to be going as well." Connie said as she left on Lion, mentally wondering to herself how Steven managed to survive with such easily fooled guardians….
