The best way to prove a swords strength, and therefore it's worth, is to put it through trials.
Blacksmiths traditionally tend to do three, and the same can be done with the wielder of the sword.
The first trial is one by fire, if the [noun] can withstand immense heat, it passes.
The second, by ice. If the [noun] can survive incredible cold, it may continue its existence.
And the third is one by earth. If the [noun] can survive being crush by weight far surpassing its own and slice through the almost unimaginable, it will succeed in the trials.
The L/n clan have developed their version of the system to perfection in order to test their swords, while keeping the basics within tradition.
However... sometimes things go wrong.
Not all swords pass the test. And not everyone or everything can survive the trials of life.
