It was a quiet night in Woodsboro. Tara Carpenter was trying to convince her best friends Amber and Jay to come over since her mom was out of town. She was in the kitchen texting their group chat when she heard the landline ringing. As she walked over to the phone, she saw it was an unknown number. She did the safe thing and declined the call.

She continued to text her friends. Tara had managed to unlock her mom's liquor cabinet and had just texted the group about it. Amber replied,'SOLD!' and Jay said,'Let's get smashed!" Tara smiled to herself as she continued to make herself some food. She quickly took a breath from her inhaler to suddenly hear the landline ringing again. She still had her phone out and was telling the group about it

Tara- Fucking landline won't stop ringing

Amber- Is Wes still bugging you?

Jay- I swear if he is I'll knock his teeth out

Tara- It's not him. Blocked number. Robocall

Amber- Robocalls don't use blocked numbers anymore.

Jay- Yeah, it's probably someone calling for your mom

Tara smiled. Her friends have always been pretty protective of her. She decided to answer the phone this time in hopes that whoever is calling will stop "Hello?" she picked up the phone and pressed it against her ear "Hello? Is Cristina there?" the voice on the other end said "No, she's not available. May I take a message?" Tara asked. "Um-- uh, Yeah, sorry. I'm a friend from her group-- oh, shit." The voice on the line spoke. The voice was pretty deep "From her shit?" Tara asked as she grabbed a seat to grab something off of a high shelf "Um... Look, just tell her I'm from group. I'm Charlie. She's got my number" the man replied "Oh, she goes to your group?" Tara was asking more questions "I shouldn't have, um... Look, just tell her Charlie called." the guy said "And I will do exactly that, Charlie, once you tell me what kind of group we're talking about. Is it AA? NA?" Tara was texting the group about her conversation with the mysterious man on the phone

Tara- Dude I think this is my mom's new BF...

Amber- Seriously???

Jay- OMG no way..

"You sound exactly like she describes you" 'Charlie' said as Tara continued with her questions "Uh, does she talk about me in group?" Tara asked "I don't think I can really talk about that" 'Charlie' replied "What does she say about me?" Tara asked "Well, she loves you very much" 'Charlie' said. Tara was walking through the house "Oh, what does she love about me?" Tara was getting curious "Oh, okay. Well... She loves that you're creative. You love art and TV and movies" 'Charlie' replied "Okay, well, lots of people love movies" Tara said "Yeah, but she says you love scary movies and that you guys have that in common. She's proud of making a fan out of you" 'Charlie continued. A small smile made it's way onto Tara's face "She is" she asked "Yeah. Well, she told me the other day, she wonders... what's your favourite scary movie?" 'Charlie asked "Uh... The Babadook. It's an amazing meditation on motherhood and grief" Tara was now back in the kitchen with her food. 'Charlie' laughed at Tara's response "Isn't that a little fancy pants?" he asked "Well, it's elevated horror" Tara responded "What does that mean 'Elevated horror'?" 'Charlie' asked "You know, it's scary but with complex emotional and thematic underpinnings. It's not just some schlocky, cheesball nonsense with wall-to-wall jump scares." Tara explained "Sounds kind of boring to me. Have you ever seen Stab?" 'Charlie' asked "Once, I think. At a sleepover when I was like, 12." Tara replied "You live in Woodsboro and you don't know Stab? Your mother loves that movie. She talks about it all the time in group. How well do you remember the original?" 'Charlie' was the one asking questions now "I don't know. I mean, it was super '90s. It was really over-lit and everyone had weird hair" Tara said "Uh-huh. Do you remember the beginning?" 'Charlie' asked "Not really. It started with a kill scene, right? They always started with a kill scene" Tara said "Yeah, that's right. That's right. It's a girl at home, alone. She answers a wrong number and starts talking with the killer who makes her play a game... Would you like to play a game?... Tara..." Tara was freaking out. This was getting weird. She immediately hung up and put the phone down. She got her phone out to lock all the doors in the house before messaging Amber and Jay
