I sat the bar, drinking a beer and listening to the loud music playing behind me. The bar had a live band that would play popular songs and sometimes offer karaoke. I come here often to drink away the loneliness of my everyday life. I'm a car engineer from a big company and I make a fair amount of money. Working there has also made me less sociable, not wanting to leave my small office to be with people. This bar let me interact with people other than the intern that's comes in every morning to get my coffee order. I had gotten off work an hour ago and it was 11:23. As I finished off my third beer, she walked in. She wore sunglasses and it was night, and we were inside. This left me suspicious as she sat down next to me.
"Hi, I'm Kaelyn." She grinned brightly and I looked over at her.
"Uh- Riley. You know, you're very brave to come up to a stranger who's almost drunk." I said tipping the empty bottle on the table top.
"Almost" She laughed and smiled at me.
"Yeah, I never try to get too wasted." I smiled back. "Question, what's with sunglasses? It's night and we're inside." I cocked my head and looked up at her. She shakily removed them revealing her bloody eye. I winced and covered my mouth with my hands.
"Uh- we need to get you to a hospital! Why would you come here and not a hospital?!" I stood up and grabbed her arm. "I'm taking you to the Emergency Room." She whimpered and covered her eye with her hands. We walked out of the bar, to my car.
"Wait what about your car? Do want to take it? I could always come back for mine." I stopped unlocking my car and looked across the car, Kaelyn was waited patiently for me to unlock it.
"I uh- walked here" She sighed and looked up to the rumbling night sky. "Better hurry, it's going to storm." I quickly inserted the key into to door and unlocked it. I sat down just before the rain started falling. Kaelyn got in too late and was soaked.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't unlock the door in time." Kaelyn slipped back on her her glasses and laughed.
"It's okay." I started the car and drove to the nearest hospital.
"So, you'll just get in anyone's car? I could be kidnapping you. You never know." I said turning into to the hospital parking lot.
"Are you?" She asked.
"No." I said as I walked her in.
"Then that's your answer. You're not so, who cares?" We were the only one's here, meaning there would be no wait.
"Hello, I need to see a doctor." Kaelyn obviously had never been here.
"Uh- okay sweetie. May I ask why?" The nurse questioned as she readied the paperwork for Kaelyn to fill out. She removed her glasses and the nurse gasped in horror. "How did that happen?!" Kaelyn looked down and started to tear up in her left eye(most likely unable to with her right eye).
"I uh- got hit with a um... Baseball! Yeah a baseball!" She was obviously lying.
"O-okay then, give this to your girlfriend and she can fill it out. We're gonna go back really quick and clean you up." Before we could say anything, Kaelyn handed me the clipboard of paperwork and we followed the nurse. She took us to a small room with a tv, medical
equipment, chairs, and a bed.
"Okay sweetheart, when you bring me the paperwork I'll send in the doctor." She left closing the door.
"Riley, she called you my girlfriend..." She let out a small laugh. "Can you write for me?" She sighed and wiped away tears that trailed from her other eye to her cheek.
"Yes, but first, what really happened? I won't tell the doctor, promise." I said raising my right hand. She looked over at me and sat up on the bed, her chin resting on her knees.
"Jasper. He hit me again. I didn't deserved it!" I was shocked. How could such an amazing woman be abused?
"You can't let him treat you like that! If he's your boyfriend, he'd care about you! An he definitely wouldn't let you be taken to the hospital by a stranger. You can't let him hit you because he doesn't own you!" I said, trying to catch my breath after that mouthful of words.
"I know..." She replied softly.
"I'm sorry for asking. Okay, first question, full name?"
"Kaelyn Liana Brooks."
"Age, race, and are you allergic to any pain killers?"
"24, Puerto Rican/White, and no."
"Okay, phone number, address, and social security number."
"643-1296, and my social security number is 4352, well the last four numbers. Also, uh-, can you use you're address?" Kaelyn sighed. She had probably gotten kicked out.
"Yeah, I'll also use my information for a contact person." I continued writing.
"Okay, since I just told you everything about me, how about you?" I continued writing and read it aloud.
"Riley Grace Greene, 26, White, 382-8367, and my address is 924 W. Finley Avenue." I looked up to see Kaelyn smiling. "What?" I asked in confusion.
"I love your name." I giggled, standing up to turn in the paperwork to the nurse.
"Why? Your name is way cuter." I left the room, and returned with a doctor. I took a seat, and watched the doctor examine her.
"Okay so, what happened... Kaelyn?" He lifted his clipboard to read her name.
"I got hit by a baseball." Kaelyn had kept the lie from earlier.
"Well, the good news is, it's not your eye bleeding. Bad news is you'll need stitches." As he talked, the doctor wiped away dried blood with rubbing alcohol. The doctor continued with a routine check up. When he put the stethoscope her chest and listened, a confused look on his face.
"Miss. Kaelyn, we need X-rays. You'll most likely need to stay over night. I think you may have a cracked rib that punctured your lung." Kaelyn turned to me shocked. It was going to be a long night.
