Mermaids have been derived throughout history as either good or evil, beautiful or ugly, heaven-sent goddesses or evil mistresses from the depths of hell. What people didn't understand was that both were true in their own ways.
There were mermaids that were cruel, evil, and ugly inside and out, but the bright goddesses that are always assumed to be those of fantasy also exist. And there are also some that are in between—the ones that have never found their place among the two other kinds.
The good ones outweigh the bad, though. The whispers of the enchantresses that draw out the naive men who see a pretty lady and put down their whole guard have been long dead (along with said naive men). The last notable gossip report among the merpeople was in May of 1969. Since then, not a peep, mostly because the merpeople population in Beacon Hills had gone dry right after that.
