Emma's POV

Phil and I sat at dinner watching Teddy play his cello. I leaned my head against Phil's shoulder with his arm around me. Alan tapped Phils arm putting his thumb down, me and Phil giving him a weird look. We all clapped for Teddy as he finished. Teddy's dad stood up clicking his glass starting his speech.

"Thank you, Teddy." he started. "The hands of a brilliant musician. And one day, a great surgeon. I admit it." he said moving in to Stu, "When I first met Stu, I was not quite sold." He said as we all laughed a bit. "He seemed unattractive. He lacked intelligence and imagination. He was missing that spark you look in a man. But then I look into Stu's eyes. He reminded me of my sweet brother, Chaiyo. For those who do not know, Chaiyo is learning-disabled and lives in a group home." Alan laughed all a sudden. "But Chaiyo loves chok. That's when I realized Stu is chok." I looked to Phil confused,

'What is chok?' he mouthed to me. I shrugged my shoulders.

"What's chok?" Stu whispered to Lauren, she gave him a face not wanting to tell him.

"Chok is soft white rice in lukewarm water." Lauren's dad explained. I pressed my lips together feeling bad for Stu. "It has no taste. We feed it to small baby and very old people. It is nourishment that everyone can digest. The world needs chok. Just as the world needs people like Stu." He said pointing to Stu. "To my sweet daughter and Stu. Congratulations." He said, raising his glass.

"Hear, Hear." Phil said.

"And now I believe that Teddy has something to say." He said as Teddy stood up.

"Sit down. I got this." Alan said, putting his hand on Teddy's arm. "Sit down, boy." he stood. "That was a great speech, sir."

"Oh dear Lord." I whispered to Phil.

"Don't judge too quickly, let's just see how it goes." Phil whispered in my ear.

"Fine."

"I like the comparisons between, uh, Stu and rice." He started.

"See not too bad." Phil whispered.

"I've also prepared a few words." Alan said, looking through his cards. "Hey, everybody, here are some fun facts. The population in Thailand is 63 million people. It is twice the size of Wyoming. Its chief exports are textiles, footwear and rice. Each year, approximately 13,000 people are killed in car accidents in Thailand. The climate in Thailand is-"

"Alan, uh..." Doug interrupts Alan, "Alan, why don't you skip to the last card, there, buddy."

"Okay. Sorry. None of you know Stu like I do. Not you. Not you. Not you. Not you. Not nobody knows Stu like I do. No one. I can't even tell you what we've been through, because we made a pact more important than blood."

"You were saying." I whispered to Phil.

"What I can tell you is this: This is not Stu's first marriage. There was a whore in Las Vegas a couple of years ago-" I hit Phil's arm to get him to stop the speech.

"All right, time's up, time up. You can sit down, bud." Phil said, stopping Alan. "You can sit down. It was good."

"I did good, though."

"Oh, God, you killed it." Phil said, patting Alan's shoulder.

"Okay. Thanks, Phil."

"Sit down. Yeah." We all clapped.
