Violet got up early the next morning, and went straight for the kitchen. She found a long piece of rope, a knife, two forks, and a cardboard box. For the fabric, she got a sharp knife and cut two straps from her jumper.

She attached the two pieces of fabric to the cardboard box to make a backpack. Then, she attached the long rope to the top of the box, and on the end of the rope, stuck on a fork, a knife, and another fork.

She was ready.

Back in the orphans' room, Count Olaf was waking up Klaus and Rowan.

"Hurry up, orphans!" Count Olaf screeched. "Where is my bride?"

"She's not your bride!" shouted Klaus.

"She will be." smirked Count Olaf. "But that's not the point. I said, "Where is she?"

"She is learning how to prepare roast beef in the kitchen." Klaus answered smoothly.

Olaf smirked again.

Violet's invention was ready to test. She swung the rope around five times, then flung in forwards. The knife dug into the stone wall, and then the two forks did.

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious." recited Violet, remembering a favourite quote of Klaus's.

She put her feet on the tower and began to climb up. However, she had not thrown the rope far enough. She panicked.

She led down on her stomach, and put her arm around one side of the tower. It looked ridiculous, but that was the only way to do it. She threw the rope again. It landed on a hook.

Violet grinned. She hadn't known there were hooks in the tower - that was perfect.

She climbed up, but got a shock.

"Hello, hello, hello. If it isn't Violet Baudelaire." It was the hook-handed man.

Violet growled. "Let Sunny go."

"I can drop her."

"No, no!" Violet begged. "Don't."

"If you'll excuse me, I need to speak to the boss." the hook-handed man smirked, and picked up a walkie talkie. "Hello, boss. Yes. I know, boss. Yes. I did. Yes. Yes. No. Of course. Yes, of course I understand. Bye."

Count Olaf soon came up into the secret tower. "I have the rich teenager's brother. And her friend. Keep them up there until tomorrow. That's when I really need them."

"Oh, boss, have you told them about the news?" asked the hook-handed man eagerly.

"That what?" asked Count Olaf. "Oh, yes! I have found an excellent person to play a very important role."

"Oh, who?" asked Rowan boldly. "One of your pathetic associates?"

Count Olaf growled and smacked Rowan's arm. "No, no, most certainly not, orphan boy. Our nice neighbour, Justice Strauss."

"Don't be ridiculous, Olaf," said Klaus. "Justice Strauss is too nice to participate in your evil schemes."

"She's not in on it." smiled Olaf. "I fooled her." He began to imitate her dramatically. With that, he left the room, howling with exaggerated laughter.
