THE DARKSKIN GIRL peered out the window of her uber, a prominent frown etched on her face. the car moved steadily, and she couldn't bear the reality of staying in this place for half a year.

mackenza sighed and slouched deeper into her seat. as she gazed at the streets of new york, she could already sense the kind of place she would be staying in.

when she first entered the uber, the smell was unpleasant—smelling like a bunch of smoke and weed. back home, their personal driver rashad had the cleanest limo with snacks and drinks, and the scent of lavender filled the luxurious car.

but now, she found herself in a random car, with her mom talking on the phone beside her. she tried to tune out their conversation while listening to "rolling stone" by brent faiyaz, but she couldn't find any relaxation at this point.

mackenza's chin rested on her hand as she gazed at the unfamiliar scenery of new york. this part of the city was completely new to her, and she couldn't help but feel a bit out of place.

this specific part of the new york was untouched territory for her, she had always been accustomed to the bustling streets and towering skyscrapers of the city, but this new landscape was different, and she didn't like different.

as the car came to hault at a red light, mackenza's attention was momentarily drawn to a group of teenagers sitting on a porch across the street. their laughter echoed through the air, even reaching her ears despite the music playing in her airpods and the car's closed windows. her face scrunched up she observed their carefree demeanor. in their hands, they cradled a rolled up blunt, its fragrant smoke swirling gracefully around them.

mackenza's eyes scanned the scene, a subtle confusion settled upon her features. she couldn't help but wonder how these people found so much joy when she didn't see any designer labels on any of their clothing.

her brow furrowed, a silent question lingering in her mind, "what's there to laugh about?"

her mother's voice interjected, pulling her out of her whirlwind of thoughts. "girl, please," her mother chimed in, "y'all don't need to put on heat alla time. she'll be okay." she reassured, her gaze briefly meeting mackenza's before returning to the conversation with fab on the phone.
