HUNTER MCLAIN WAS NEVER really interested in love. She's seen too many romcoms where everyone gets together after some years of being an adult and getting engaged. Or they are just so desperate to get out of their parents' house that they decide to get married as soon as possible. No matter how much they protest to their loved ones. It always ends up the same.
They both fall in love eventually and the happy ending always follows. And they can't help but want the same thing. Just like every other couple.
Hunter was content with having regular one night stands and forgetting all about it the next day.
She doesn't have any plans to start her own family anytime soon either.
The whole concept of love is way to far fetched for her. So she decided to leave all relationships aside. Even the occasional hookup with someone in the hospital was fine since her focus was mainly on her job as a first year resident anyway.
Her job was all she needed. Her intern year was now over and she was ready for the real shit.
-
"Your first shift starts now and ends in 36 hours." Hunter spoke to her new interns as she showed them around the hospital. "You're nobodies, the bottom of the chain. You're gonna run labs and will have to enjoy it." She faintly copied what Bailey said last year but she didn't care.
That woman was a badass.
Luckily the interns thought her face was scary enough so they instantly began to follow her with no problem.
She got this.
The place was pretty big, so Hunter decided to make herself useful. She took her group into different departments and pointed them towards each area.
"All you need to know is here. This one leads to emergency rooms, this one has surgery halls and this one does patient intake, and that one handles paperwork and records.'' She told them in a clear voice. They nodded in understanding before going off to find where they were supposed to go.
It seemed they were doing well.
Most of the intern class were eager to join and Hunter smiled to herself thinking about her work here being finally over with.
Later in the day Hunter, Alex, Meredith, Cristina and İzzie were chatting.
"I hate them." Cristina groaned.
Hunter let out a smug chuckle. "Mine are terrified of me."
The cardio resident rolled her eyes and gave her a playful punch.
"I rocked it." Alex spoke up. "I'm like the new Nazi."
Hunter and Cristina glanced at each other before bursting into laughter.
"Dream on, buddy." Hunter smirked.
She really got this.
-
The day soon got busy as they all disbanded to rush to their patients. Hunter quickly noticed that resident work was more harder than last year.
When she was walking in the hallway to catch up to a patient, she bumped into somebody.
"Oh my god!" She let out a small yelp. "Are you okay?" A soft voice caught her attention. Hunter looked down at the person she bumped into.
It was one of Meredith's interns. She had short brown hair and wore a shy smile. "Sorry." Hunter apologized. "I wasn't watching where I was going." That was true enough, the hallway was full of medical staff rushing to different places for their patients.
The intern shook her head, looking apologetic. "No, it's alright. I should be more careful anyway." She chuckled softly. Hunter couldn't help but notice that she had a small mole under her right eye. Hunter found it cute actually.
"Are you alright?" The intern asked, bringing Hunter back to reality. "You kind of spaced out there.""Yeah, sorry I was uh..." She trailed off, staring blankly ahead as she tried to find words. "Thinking... I guess." Hunter finished lamely.
She was never this awkward with women before.
The intern nodded with a sweet smile. "Oh, okay then." She paused for a second.
"My name is Lexie. Lexie Grey." She stuck out her hand. Hunter stared at it, unsure if she even wanted to take it in her hands again.
After realizing that Hunter was staring, Lexie retracted her hand and put it behind her back nervously. "Um, are you lost? Can I help you find something? Oh gosh, I'm talking nonsense." She laughed awkwardly. Hunter chuckled along with her.
"Not really. I'm Hunter Mclain, a resident." Hunter introduced herself politely. "And yeah thanks." She shook Lexie's offered hand while trying not to cringe because her hand felt sweaty. The grip was firm, strong even. Hunter liked it.
"Oh shoot!" Lexie exclaimed. "I have to go. Nice to meet you Dr.Mclain." She smiled before rushing to the other way. Hunter watched her leave.
"Call me Hunter!" She yelled after her. Lexie turned around and gave her a thumbs up before leaving. Hunter felt herself grin wider. Maybe she'll make new friends today? She thought, hopeful.
But of course, fate had another idea in mind. Hunter only made it through two hours of work without bumping into anyone else except Alex who was already done for the day. She managed to stay focused long enough for her shift to end though.
-
Hours later Hunter ran into Meredith in the hallway glumly staring at someone. She soon realized it was Lexie and George.
"Why are you staring at George and the new intern like that?" She asked with a grin.Meredith turned to her with a deadpan look.
"Apparently that girl is my sister."
Hunter's smile faded staring at her friend in shock. "Well, shit." She spoke after a minute.
She looked back at Lexie and then Meredith again. So the cute girl she met was her best friend's sister?
That should be fun. Hunter guessed that now she had no chance to hook up with her. Meredith Grey was not the force to deal with.
"But, Do I even want to sleep with her?" Hunter thought. Normally she would wanna at least be bold with the women she meets but Lexie felt different.
Very different.
This year was gonna be a blast.
