Uki slammed his book shut in frustration. The subject of soulmates uninterested him. In fact, love was a subject that Uki didn't want to mess with. Sure, he did like to be flirty with people, but to genuinely love someone was a little far out there. Or maybe, it was the fact that he did want to be loved, but finding the right guy was hard. Not knowing what it was like to be loved by someone in a romantic sense was challenging. From what he remembered about his parents, they weren't someone who should be raising a child, and never had the milestones that a normal, functioning family would have. If they weren't busy yelling at him, they were occupied screaming at each other and occasionally throwing things. Uki's parents didn't love one another, and it felt like they didn't love him either. And though Uki doesn't dare become his parents, it can't help but scare him if he went into a binding marriage with someone who made him insane to the point of hurting others and the walls surrounding them. And this novel hit a little too close to home in the wrong way.

But it didn't matter. He had to read this book for his English course and analyze the shit out of each and every line on every page. He didn't know what this Eveland author was thinking, and he didn't want to know what or the why of this author's intentions when he wrote this story. The words were captivating and an overall beautiful story about two people falling love through fate, Uki must admit. But the message was not for him.

Drawn out of thoughts by his small clock on his equally small desk, Uki gently placed his copy of the novel into his book bag, and headed to his University. When he arrived, he headed to the lecture hall, bracing for impact as they would be discussing the first part of the novel during class. He sat towards the back of the class, and reluctantly pulled out the heavy weight in his bag and placed it on his desk, and stared at the cover. Two happy people, looking at each other as the red string of fate wraps around them before forming a heart shape in the middle between the two of them, clearly in love with one another.

Uki was lost in his own thoughts again, but quickly pulled back to reality when a voice came into earshot, quickly taking a seat next to Uki.

"Yo Uki, you good? You look like you are zoning out," Enna, Uki's best friend said as he took his seat.

"That's because I was bitch," Uki responded, rolling his eyes at Enna for stating an obvious fact.

"Ohhh so you were busy dreaming about some beautiful boy then I see," Enna said playfully.

"Shut the fuck up," Uki said but was met with Enna laughing at how she was able to annoy him not even a minute later from walking through the doors.

And though Uki wouldn't admit it, he was rather grateful Enna pulled him from his headspace, as that was somewhere he would like to avoid going to.

"Anyway, before you go back to your daydream of handsome men, what do you think about soulmates?" Enna asked.

Uki rolled his eyes again for Enna, starting the conversation that way she did, but still managed to deliver a genuine response. "I don't believe in soulmates."

"Wha- why not?" Enna inquired.

"Because, what if you don't love your soulmate? Or what if they don't love you? I don't think I want to leave my love life in the hands of the universe."

"But isn't the thought of that somewhat romantic though?" Enna responded. "Unless, what if we were soulmates and didn't know?"

"Um, no thank you," Uki responded without hesitation.

"I know you're out of my league but at least TRY to sound more enthusiastic about that..bitch," Enna said, lightly smacking Uki's shoulder.

Before Uki could come up with a comeback, the professor entered the lecture hall, signaling class had begun, and with that, the discussion of the novel.
